Hi, Parents Won't Get Me Help.
Posted: 04-13-07 09:40am

I have been suffering from depression for 3 years. I'm only 17. Recently I have been having symptoms of Bi-polar, extreme anxiety, and worse depression. I have also had anorexia and bulimia off and on for 5 years. I'm tired of feeling sorry for myself and I want to get back out there and live life. I want to get help and I want meds. But the problem is my parents do not agree with meds. They won't even take me to a psychiatrist. I can't get help on my own until I am 18. My mom had a bad experience with anti-depressants and she is afraid the same thing will happen to me. Is there any way I can try and convince them that this is for my own good? Can I go ahead and get meds or just even help without their permission? I just wish they would understand that I just want to get better and I can't do this on my own. Every day just gets worse and I want to get help before it is too late. It would be good for me just to even have someone to talk to.

Thanks so much for reading! I really appreciate it. Very
Happy

Do you have a school counselor or a close teacher you can talk to at school? I confess, i hated high school and was very depressed there. I had a half-hearted suicide attempt and then I decided to throw myself into art and activities because it made me feel better to do the things I was good at. i stopped caring what any of my classmates said about me and got friends outside of school. If you spoke to one of your teachers they could probably get you in touch with a local mental health clinic in your area. i am sorry you are having such a hard time. I think it would be a good thing for you to receive some help. Obviously if your mam had some problems with this it may run in the family a bit.

Talk to someone
Get involved in something positive that makes you feel good, no matter how small or insignificant
Get help.

Good luck

Did you drop or graduate? Maybe you still have a teacher there with whom you were friendly? If not, go to the phone book and look up dept of human services. Check their listing for mental health. Call them......I will wait...................................... .......................................... .......................................... .......................................... .......................got it? OK. they will help you even though you are not 18.

I dropped out last year. Whenever I try to talk to my parents about my depression and problems they tell me its my fault and to quit whining...

Im not to sure what facilities you have avaliable where you live but in my home town our local council offers free counciling.

My suggestion would be to see if an appointment can be made and take your parents along with them. Tell them how important this is to you and all you want them to do is listen. By having a councellor with you it will give you a controlled environment and they may be able to help your parents understand what you are going through and whats needed for you to be the person you know you are but are having trouble being at the moment.

Good Luck
