we've been giving .gabe the .simiilac .advanced .soy formula... & ugh, i hate the stuff. it's made it so hard for him to poop & made him sooo fussy & extremely gassy. so we just switched him to .enfamil .gentlease .lipil.. hopefully it'll be better.

I hope it helps .Gabe, .Kris!

sometimes when amelia had a hard time going...i would buy a can of low iron formula by .enfamil. Then she would go really well and then i would switch back to the regular stuff. it worked wonders for us.

i've heard bad things about nestle good start.

we use the bj's generic brand of enfamil lipil. i compared labels and it's *exactly* the same as the name brand but about 1/4 of the price (we spend $40 a month on formula with no wic or any assistance).

I've used the same that .krissy gave .gabe (the soy), and I think it's what made .oni soo calm. (besides her natural temperment)

When switching from breastmilk to formula, it *always* constipates lil ones. Because of the iron. If you can get the low iron, like .gen said, it would be good.

But .meggan, I think the kind you got is perfect!!

i dunno, but my ped said that iron in formula does not constipate babies. she said its an old wives tale. and soy is *known* to constipate. i would avoid soy if you can...she also said its dangerous to get a low iron formula bc it can cause anemia. though i dont agree with a lot of things that pediatricians say, i do agree with that.

also, i know several babies that cant tolerante dha and ara. my son is one of them. it makes him sick and he spits up. instead, i give him organic flax see oil every day.
i have heard wonderful things about nestle goostart, without dha/ara.

We got a ton of Emfanil Lipil free from going on their website when I was pregnant. We don't use it though. I suppose it will be handy when I stop .BF

We started .oni on the regular enfamil. and we had to get suppositories. It was *awful*!! She was soooo cranky on it, so we decided to try the soy.

She turned into a completely calmer baby. Didn't spit up, didn't cry, nothing.

We all know that no pediatrician is going to agree. Same as, no baby is the same.

WIth our first kids, it's basically trial and error. (it preps us for future kids!)

Nat, it seems like .trace's Dr. denounces everything as "an old wives tale."

let me ask you, does s/he think supplemental vitamins are unecessary too? I'm asking because my friends ped told her that her daughter didn't need them until she was waaaaaay older.

Now her daughter has an immune deficiancy from lack of vitamins essential to the body. (she's 2 btw)

sarah, that is not what i am talking about. i realize that switching to soy helps a lot of babies who can not tolerate milk protein. that isnt the issue. what i am saying is that soy can constipate. so avoid it if you *can*. i have met people that put their babies on soy for no apparent medical reason.
as for the vitamins, we have never discussed them. supplemental vitamins are meant for babies who dont get adequate nutrition via formula or who are breastfed exclusively thus lacking in iron and vitamin D after 6 months of age. my son consumes nearly 36 oz of formula a day, so vitamin deficiency isnt an issue.

oh, btw, maybe your friend should research how to eat healthy balanced diets. if she knew how to do this, her daughter wouldnt have immune deficiencies. too many americans feed their kids cheetos and mcdonalds. in those cases, obviously kids are going to need supplements, because they arent getting what they need from their diets.

Oni has been on a supplemental vitamin since 3 months. Because when she gets a fever, she becomes anemic.(her Dr. draws her blood everytime she has a fever-in the office)

I'm sure, for some babies, soy can give bowel problems. As it's prob the reason many can't handle a regular formula, and need lipil, soy, etc.

As for my friend, you ain't neva lyin!! I've sent her soooo many wesites about living & eating healthy, and she seems to ignore it.

SHe feeds her child "chicken(nuggets) and fries" everyday!!!! It's frustrating to me, only because I'm totally opposite. I'll give .oni cheese, and she'll give her child fries. I'll give .oni fruit, and she'll give hers candy.

What boggles my mind the most, is we both went to school together, and studied natural ways of living & eating. I took my studies and began living by them, and it seems like she just tossed them.

She, along with all my other friends, laugh in my face when I tell them I *refuse* to give .oni french fries. Or any other fried food. THey all say "you'lll seeee!" But i have seen. I've seen how unhealthy their children are, and how *none* of their children eat veggies.

sarah,
about the anemic thing, thats why i was originally saying its a bad idea to give formula without iron.

for me, before i go into the realm of "supplements" i do everything i can do provide adequate nutrition through healthy diet and formula.
i feel sorry for your friends daughter. she is setting her up for a lifetime of unhealthy eating habits.
i swear i am moving to europe some day! i like their way of living much better!
