Pregnant With Chron's Disease? Posted: 04-15-07 02:56am
I have actually 2 questions .
The first one is: I have strong pain in my
lower left side of my belly prior to my
daily bowel movement for the last few
months. Is that normal?
And my second and mybe more important
question is:
I am 26, married, but have no children
yet, because of my Chron's. I am afraid to
get pregnant. We would like to have
children soon and we want them so
badly...but I would like to have healthy
children. Is it safe to get pregnant with
Chron's disease and what are the
conditions?What should I do to have a
healthy baby? Is he going to born with
Chron's disease also? How many children do
you think I could have with my sickness?
I would like to have your oppinion on
this. Please help.

I've had Crohns since l was 11 and l had a
healthy baby when l was 21. The risk of
your child getting crohns is very slim
(about 5%) and so far my child is
perfectly healthy so there is no reason
why yours wouldn't be. In fact when l was
pregnant my crohns was the best it has
ever been.

Hiya
I have Colitis which is near enough the
same as crohns only that it affects the
large colon. I was diagnosed back in 2002
when i first had a bad flare up. I fell
pregnant in 2003 and i felt normal, no
stomach pains, no diarrhea just normal.
My son is 3 this year and is very healthy
and very very active.

Autoimmune Posted: 04-17-07 16:38pm
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are
both auto immune diseases. When you
conceive your auto-immune system is very
quiet. This happens so that your body
does not view the baby as an "intruder" or
a foreign body which needs to be attacked
and expelled. As a result, auto-immune
disorders are generally very quiet during
pregnancy. in fact, many sufferers
indicate feeling better than usual during
pregnancy. I have Celiac disease, and I
really felt great in regard to that when i
was pregnant. I do not know what the
hereditary markers are for Crohn's
disease, but I do know that your chances
of having it increase when you have a
parent who is affected by it.

this is NOT to discourage you.firstly i
have 2 gorgeous HEALTHY girls ages 8 and
10 years.i have had crohnes since age12.it
has been severe enough at times that my
parents were informed i would likely not
make it through the night 3 times.my first
pregnancy i spent one month in the
hospital and was put on prednisone(safe
during pregnancy)and tapered down oo 7.5
mg by the time she was born.she was 3
weeks early and low blood sugar(due to
prednisone)but healthy and home in 2
days.my second pregnancy we planned while
i was in remission and all hell broke
loose.from 4 weeks on i got sicker and
sicker.i was hospitalized put on high dose
steroids and tpn as i was losing weight
fast.i was 92 pounds at 3 months(5'6
feet)by 5 months termination was suggested
as it was literally killing me.NO WAY.by
the 6th month still in the hospital i
started finally gaining weight the way you
should when pregnant (thanks to tpn)was
out of hospital at 7 months pregnant and
had her at 35 weeks.she too had low blood
sugars but healthy otherwise and home in 8
days.it was my body that suffered during
pregnancy, even my 2nd child danced in
every ultrasound(which were daily for
quite some time).i had to have surgery
after she was born.it was hell.would i do
it again?IN A HEARTBEAT.neither of my
girls shows any signs of crohnes(beleive
me I'm watching closely).they are both
healthy, compete in dance,do well in school
ect,ect....my point in writing to you is
to let you know it isn't always
easy.....but it is soooo worth anything
you may go through.usually most people do
extremely well with crohnes during
pregnancy.my girls are my strength and on
those days where your crohnes is bad and
you don't want to get out of bed ,you see
those gorgeous faces and know IT'S GOING
TO BE A GREAT DAY ANYWAY! good luckand
best wishes

Thank you so much for your short letter. It
meant a lot to me. I am 3 months pregnant
now, but still a little worried sometimes.
It meant so much to me what you wrote. I
am sorry that you had to go through on all
this. I have no major problems so far and
I hope it stays that way untill my little
one decides to come out.I am praying for
him/her to be healthy just like your
beautiful girls...Thank you so much again
for taking the time and write me.
