Ava had a cold about 6 weeks ago, a week
after getting off of antibiotics she got
an ear infection, it's only been 1 1/2
weeks since she got off of antibiotics for
that and she has a cold again. She's been
coughing, sneezing, and has a stuffy nose.
I'm sick of her being sick! She's happy,
but it kills me to hear her cough and
sneeze. For Easter she mixed with my
neice that was sick and her mother didn't
bother to tell me until after they played
with the same toy and my other neice made
them kiss. I was pissed!
I don't want her on antibiotics again. Do
you guys bring your kids to the dr.
everytime they have a cold? I always did,
but I'm sick of it now. I feel like I'm
there every 2 weeks. And I breastfeed for
2 weeks. I know it's not long, but isn't
the colostrum suppose to help with
immunity?

i take my kids everytime but only cuz its
100% free for me to take them. my doctor
gave us benedryl for kids last time to
help dry up the mucus
it doesnt matter that she was on
antibiotics and has a cold now. colds are
viruses, they dont respond to antibiotics.
i use benadryl for colds too, it really
helps the sneezing and watery eyes and
runny nose.
i would be cautious about antibiotic use
in babies. once you start using
antibiotics you build up a reistance to
them and then next time they may not work
well. besides, i just read a great artcile
by the famous dr greene that talks about
how many ear infections are virual, and
dont even respond to antibiotics and they
can be unnecessary.
if you want to read the article, here is

have you thought about giving her a
vitamin c supplement? my son doesnt really
get sick much, but if he did, i would
probably give him some "emergenc C". i
have heard good things about it.

The doctor's always prescribe it. It
works for the ear aches, but not for the
colds. I hated that they gave it to her
twice in one month. If I go and he gives
me a prescription, I'm not filling it. I
give her either pediacare decongestion and
cough or triaminic cough and cold, but I
hate even giving her that. Thanks guys.

yeah thats the problem, doctors are
handing out antibiotics like candy. if you
read that article that is the
summarization. many parents go into the
office demanding that the doctor do
something, so often times they will right
a script just to shut them up. then it
just becomes a routine. but the fact is, a
lot of the time when a baby is sick, its
just a virus, so antibiotics are
pointless, plus your child is
disadvantaged with unnecessary
antiobiotics because of the issue of
building a resistance to them.
also, that article talks about the
differnce between an "ear ache" and and
actual infection. an "ear ache" in no way
calls for antibiotics. like i said, a
viral thing like a cold that can come with
an "ear ache" will not go away with
antibiotics, it just needs time. though if
the child is on meds, then the parent will
assume they helped, when in reality it was
just time that went by and it went away on
its own, just like every cold virus.
it also talks about how if your child
actually does have an infection and needs
antibiotics, that they do absoltuely
nothing for the pain. so if your child is
in pain and you are giving antibiotics,
you outta give tylenol as their pain will
not be controlled by antibiotics alone.
oh and here is info on the new guidelines
for ear infections:
