Okay, This Is Driving Me Nuts Posted: 04-17-07 18:23pm
I'm not sure what section to post this in,
so .i'll just post it here and .kia or
.jess can move it if they feel it belongs
elsewhere. I don't mind.
Right then. I'm still breastfeeding
.alyvia along with feeding her solids. I
had my first "period" last month starting
on .march 8th. It only lasted a couple of
days and was super-light. Most of it was
brownish, although there was some lighter
red color in there. Gross, I know, but
there you go. Anyway, I had extreme
moodswings as well, so I assumed that it
was my first period since giving birth.
Fast foward to today. According to a 28
day cycle, .i'm now 12 days late. Since
the 5th or so, .i've been experiencing
cramping and have convinced myself every
single day that I was about to start my
period, but it never comes. I've had
absolutely no spotting, and my discharge
isn't behaving like discharge should
behave right before a period. And for the
record, I have tested and got a negative
result, so I shouldn't be pregnant.
I know breastfeeding can delay the return
of ovulation (and thus, your period) - but
my question is, once a cycle returns, is
it possible for it to go away again or for
breastfeeding to make it irregular? Or is
it possible that my "period" last month
wasn't a period at all, though it was the
only spotting/bleeding .i've had since
giving birth?
I've tried to google this stuff and .i'm
not coming up with anything. any
ideas or suggestions (besides "ask your
doctor", please - I will if I have to) are
more than welcome.
i really dont know enough about
breastfeeding and what it can do to your
cycles to offer you any advice....
but have you considered taking a test?

unless you mean I should retest.
which I have considered. But I was 9 or 10
days late when I tested the first time, so
that should have been accurate. Ugh. I
might go back to the dollar store and grab
another test.
Are there any breastfeeding smarties
floating about?

I got my period at like 12 weeks or
something...I have forgotten when i
started...but i do know that 26-28 days
later it didn't show up and then i spotted
a few times, it wasn't until after i
started breast feeding that i have had a
regular cycle......but it's only been
three months it was normal...not it's a no
show......but it's not because i am
preggers. (terra)

yes, that is very likely.
often during the first 12 months or so of
breastfeeding a woman's body will
"practise" it's cycle.
It's common to feel like your period is
about to begin but not actually arrive.
sometimes your ovaries release enough
hormones (by variation) to cause slight
bleeding or spotting but not enough to
cause ovulation and therefore not a full
or proper period.
remember though that ovulation comes
before a period so if you are having
unprotected (or pull and pray) sex then
you are at risk of pregnancy
Many women who breastfeed exclusively find
that their periods start to return when
they start giving baby solids (ie reducing
the amount of breastfeeding) and that it
can take a good few months (or a few
cycles) for them to return to
normal/regular once they start.

Nataliachick7 posted this link a while
ago. It's a Le Leche League site. They
are really great, and someone there may
have a bit more insight into bf and things
that go along with it. The members are
really supportive and good about answering
questions, especially if you are new.
