Question About Ultrasounds Posted: 04-18-07 14:54pm
I just came back from seeing my doctor for
the first time since becoming pregnant. I
thought for sure that she would send me
for an ultrasound in a couple of weeks but
she said no that we would wait until i was
18 weeks. I have been pregnant 2 times
before and I always went for one around 8
weeks or so then again at around 20 weeks.
This is my first time being pregnant with
this family doctor so I'm not to confident
in her. she is referring me to the same
OBGYN that I had for my last pregnancy so
I am happy about that.
But what I am asking is is it normal not
to have an ultrasound until you are that
far along. Like what if I was having twins
I would definitely like to know before I
am that far along. Has anyone else gone
through this.

I am not sure what the common practise is
in Canada. But there are some Canada
ladies on here so I'm sure someone will be
able to help you out.
Maybe the doctor you saw today was just
giving you a conservative estimate and
your ob/gyn will send you sooner.

Hmmm, sounds a bit strange to me. I was
sent right away to check for my conception
date (since I had irregular periods), but
all of my other g/f's went a couple of
weeks after seeing thier doctor for the
first time, and then went again around the
20 week mark (like you have done before).
I would question this and if she still
won't send you , I would look into getting
another doctor in the mean time before
it's time for you to start seeing your
OBGYN!!!!!!! I am also from Canada, and I
know that it is regaule practive for them
to send you twice, but not more than that
unless there are complications! hope this
helps......good luck!

i'm in the .u.s. and i was only supposed
to get 1 ultrasound at 18 weeks (i ended
up with 3 all together due to
complications at the end). if you have
regular periods there's really no reason
for one before 18 weeks.
as for wondering if there are twins,
they'd probably be able to tell when they
feel and measure your uterus or if they
hear 2 heartbeats.
i don't think it's unusual at all and
certainly no reason to find a new doctor.

In Canada we only go early if they suspect
complications. Other than that you go at
18 wks.
HOpe that helps,

I believe that's normal, unless they
suspect a problem ... or there are
problems with your date ...
A scan at 8 weeks is usually to accurately
date your pregnancy but Most doctors don't
do it.
I had my first scan at 12 weeks , but it
was an emergency ultrasound. Then my 20 wk
ultrasound and I'mm be having one again at
30 wks (next monday!)
No worries I
m sure your doctor knows what she is
doing!
good luck!

That's strange, b/c everyone I know has
gone for 2 u/s??!!!! No one had
complications and I was the only one with
irregular periods, so then I'm not sure
why we have all gone for 2? Maybe it's
different depending on the Province? My
doctor told me that it was regular
practice to be sent for 2, and no more
unless there are problems!
Hmmmmm...............

a g/p will not normally send you for an
ultrasound...your ob-gyn should. if you
are being refered then after you see your
ob-gyn they will most likely send you to
get an ultrasound. It doesn't sound that
weird to me...it's normal practice.

with my first pregnancy, i was bleeding,
so i had an early ultrasound.. that
pregnancy ended in a miscarriage.. but
when i became pregnant again, it was the
same month i miscarried.. so they had me
coming for an ultrasound just to be
absolutely sure i was pregnant again..
otherwise i wouldn't have gone for an
ultrasound until i was 22wks! so it's
pretty normal to just have 1, unless there
are complications or reason for possible
concern.
