well, I'm 16 years old and I have a
horrible fear of throwing up.
I don't know how it started but its like
totally taking over me.
I hardly go out with my friends anymore.
I don't like going anywhere without like,
my mom. Cause idk I don't have that fear
when I'm with her.
but if I'm alone somewhere, especially
out, its uncontrollable.
I had to be pulled out of school and I've
been homeschooled for 3 years now due to
this.
and I totally hate it.
all I do is stay home and I just want to
like, be cured of this if there's anyway.
I wanna enjoy the rest of my teenage years
and actually go to highschool but I can't
due to this.

I'm sorry that you have to deal with this
fear. Do you throw up often, is that why
you have the fear. Or are you afraid that
some off circumstances will cause you to
throw up?

well I throw up like, once a year.
I do everything to try to not like
throwup.
I don't even know why I'm so scared of
vomiting. It just happens. like today, I
was supposed to go to a concert, and I was
feeling totally fine this morning, so I
was like okay cool, I'm feeling great.
and the concert is at 6, and I'm not going
anymore cause I feel sick. I don't know.

When you say you feel sick, do you mean
you feel like you may throw up or you just
generally don't feel well?
It kinda sounds like anxiety, have you
ever brought this to your doctors or moms
attention?

I feel sick to my stomach.
and I have been to a doctor for anxiety
cause I do have anxiety.
and my doctor put me on ambien, to help me
sleep at night, and xanax.
and it didn't really help, but I was
taking it anyways.
but I stopped taking both, because
recently a friend of mine died from
xanax.
so it kind of scared me a bit.
and my mom doesn't like taking me to the
doctors cause she says its all in my
head.
and I know that's true, but I just
constantly think negative thoughts.
like, oh what will happen if I start
feeling sick. and bang, I feel sick to my
stomach.
I just don't know how to control the
negative thoughts. I try everything.

It is probably your anxiety that is
causing this. You must have severe
anxiety.
There is a medicine called phenergan. It
is used to help treat nausia/vomitting. I
personally take it almost daily and my
doctors have assured me that it is fine to
do so. However, If you are not actually
becoming sick, I am not sure how much help
it would be for you. You may want to
concider asking your doctor if it would be
right for you.

Hi, I have a simular problem
When I was 14 I got a balance problem and
felt ill all the time now im 18 and still
have the anxity about being sick.... I
really fear it. I think you have
emetrophobia, im not sure if I have this
as I dont mind being sick if im on my own
but am terrified of being sick where
people can see/hear me even my mum
(weird). I also went through 2 years not
going more than 15 mins away from my house
incase I felt ill. What I did was exposure
therapy, I didnt realise I was doing it at
the time but I had a crush and that desire
to be with the person overcame my fears
and the more I did things the less fear
and anxity I was feeling. These days I go
to sixth form and often have to leave
classes due to feeling ill but I know if I
want to do somthing I will do it and if im
ill then im ill, it doesnt matter....Well
thats what I tell myself.
My tips are see a doctor they may be able
to give you therapy to help with it,
gradually do things that make you anxious
and build up to things you dont think you
could do, Dont worry about telling people
this is really common I have found lots of
people who have the same thing, Think
about what you actually fear about being
sick ( I don't know what I fear about it
and when I try to think what I fear about
it it calms me down as I don't know ).
There is this tapping thing that helped me
im not sure what its called but you first
rate your fear from 1- 10 10 being really
bad. Then you tap 5 times on forehead,
under each eye, on the side of your chest,
each side on your collar bone while
thinking of you fear. Then on your hand
just above your pinky and the finger next
to it while you have your eyes open,
closed, looking down to the left, looking
down to the right, circling them one way
then the other, then hum a song (I do
happy birthday) then rate you fear again
and it should go down.
Hope this makes sense good luck!

Its sorta like being a hypcondriate,
because if you think that when you go out,
you'll throw up..your obviously going to
feel sick because your making yourself
feel it. With me, if i tell myself im
going to be sick because i dont feel all
that well, whether it be my acid reflux or
just a normal angisty attack i'll become
even sicker. Just tell yourself you'll be
fine, its easier said then done but in the
end if you teach yourself that you'll be
ok you'll be fine!

Im a bit late on a reply. But I have a
similar problem. Like im going away on the
22 n im scared cuz i dont wanna get sick
especially away from home. I have no
reasone to think im going to be sick I
havent come in contact with any sick
people recently, its jsut how I am. My mom
tells me I most the most anxious person
shes ever met. lol
But I do agrea with alot of you becuase I
could be prefectaly fine one minute but
than i get it in my head that I dont feel
good and my mom or Boy friends have to
calm me down and take to a an area were
thier areant many people so I can relax.
It really is a mind over matter thing.
Easier said than done for sure.

My Life Seems So Helpless Right Now. Posted: 11-15-07 17:29pm
As a mother of 2 I am constantly in the
car. Either running errands or working.
Everyday i'm scared beyond belief that I
will get naseous and need the throw up.
After a little while in the car I begin
getting naseous my heart starts beating
quickly, my palms sweat, and I just want
to breakdown and cry. After a while it
subsides, but I live my life in fear. I
would rather be a home body than go far
from my home and feel sick. I'm tired of
telling my friends that I have plans when
they ask for us to go to the the movies,
rodeo, mall, ect. I don't want anyone to
hear or see me get sick and throwing up on
the freeway would be the ultimate
embarrassment. My husband is beginning to
think I'm a ridiculous hypocondriac.
Help! My family life is suffering also,
because I rarely will go to public places.
Any suggestions?
Is it all in my head? Or could it
possibly be a lagit medical problem? My
nasea dosen't always just exist in the
car.

Fear of Throwing Up !!! Posted: 11-19-07 18:07pm
oh honey,,,,I feel your pain. I am now a
42 year old woman, and still get a little
anxious about throwing up....I will do
anything not to....I dont remember having
this fear as a young girl, or even in my
20's , but it did rear its ugly head later
in life. I think it has to do with my
father being an alcoholic, and vomiting
(very loudly)every single night...it was
not pleasant from what I remember....you
just have to tell yourself,,,that its
okay,,,,our body some times needs to
vomit,,,to get rid of poisens,,,,I still
hate it,,,but it happens....You need to
keep yourself real busy,,,so you dont
dwell on it,,,,I had great anxiety over
this very thing,,,but have learned to keep
myself very busy...and it works
wonders.....

I'm so sorry to hear you are going through
this. It sounds like you have
emetophobia. I was diagnosed with
emetophobia and agoraphobia when I was 17
(about 13 years ago)
I could have written your post myself! I
do everything you mentioned and then some.
Public places are my biggest fear, and I
stay home a lot of the time. I avoid
malls and movie theaters too! I don't
even like going into a big store, unless I
can stay near the exit doors. Your nausea
may a symptom of anxiety. I know that
every time I even think about leaving my
house, my stomach starts to hurt. When I
do drive places, I avoid traffic jams and
bridges (they seem to make it worse). I
am in therapy, again, and am hoping it
will work this time.
Try looking up emetophobia. You may
notice you have a lot of the symptoms.
There are many good support sites also.
Please PM me if you have any questions or
just want to vent. It's always nice to
talk with soemone who knows what you are
going through.

I'm tired of life being ruined Posted: 02-22-08 23:45pm
Hi you guys, I have this same fear, had it
since I was little but it got worse as I
got older. It doesn't stop me from going
out but when I am out shopping or at the
mall it can over take me and I had to run
to the bathroom for fear I will puke. I
suffer a terrible panic when I am out in
public and I think I might throw up in
front of strangers. Sometimes I just
huddle by the toilet crying. I rarely
actually puke, maybe once a year, but
several times a day I will feel nauseated
out of nowhere, esp. at work, or late at
night when I am about go to bed. It's
awful. I have been diagnosed with IBS so
it might account for some of it, but I
think a lot of it is due to fear. It
sucks!!!!

Hi there,
I would definately say you have
emetophobia, I myself am emetophobic, I
used to be alot worse than I am now but
its still something that takes over parts
of my life. I have only thrown up once in
the last 10 years (I am 23) and I think I
have managed to do this cause my will to
not throw up overrules my stomach. It is
all in the mind, I think my reason for
being emetophobic is the fear of not
having control over my body, I hate the
feeling that this horrible thing can
happen and there is nothing I can do
about. However I also fear seeing,
hearing, smelling or coming in contact
with vomit at all, Im also scared to throw
up and have other people see me throw up,
I always like to be alone when I feel
queasy. Its so strange, and people dont
understand it. I have horrible panic
attacks when I am around someone who is
sick or when I smell it or hear it, my
heart starts racing and I hyperventilate
and cry and have to get away. I cant even
help my friends and family when they are
sick and it makes me feel horrible!!!
My way of coping with my emetophobia is by
always having gravol and ginger ale on
hand, they both do wonders when your
feeling icky. Also, I pinch the skin
between the thumb and pointer finger when
Im feeling sick and it helps, something to
do with the nerves there, try it. I work
downtown too so I see vomit alot more
often than Im used to but it has sort of
desensitized me to it, it still freaks me
out but I just tell myself its just food,
and it cant hurt me.
I wish you luck, its a hard thing to deal
with but I know its possible to get past
the worst of it

Take dramamine. I know it
sounds cliche, but it works. It will make
you very sleepy (sleep is good on planes)
and dramamine is also a GREAT anti-emetic.
Are you on any medication for your
anxiety? Xanax works wonders, and calms
my fears anytime I leave my house or have
to go into a situation that makes me
uncomfortable. Your general practitioner
may even be able to prescribe it to you if
you tell him about your phobia and that
you are flying soon.
If medication is not for you, try bringing
along things that make you feel
comfortable. Maybe an Ipod and some
magazines?
I hope everything works out for
you.....have faith in yourself, it's the
first step in overcoming this terrible
phobia. You can do this, and will be
fine.
(by the way I am also emetophobic)

Thank you so much!!! Do you know if I can
take dramamine with Xanax?? I do have a
prescribtion for Xanax and do take it
while I fly, but for some reason I feel
trapped on a plane. I hate to say this
but I make my daughter take dramamine
because because I can't deal with other
people getting sick either. Thanks for
any advise you have. I feel as if this
fear is taking over my every thought!!!!!
