Hi,

I am currently on the pill and I was considering maybe switching to an IUD, most likely Mirena. I am going to talk with someone next week, just wanted to get some other advise first.
I heard that it may not be a good idea to get an IUD if you have never given birth. I also heard that insertion can be painful and may last a while after insertion, I am sure it varys from person to person.
I really dont want to use the pill anymore for the fact that sometimes it's hard for me to remember to take it at the same time everyday.
Anybody have any experience with an IUD(Mirena)?

They have come along way with iud's. In the past they were not approved for women who had not given birth. They have now approved them and many woman are pleased with their experience. Many of the ladies on here use them. I'm sure someone will be able to give you their personal experience.

I cannot use hormonal BC pills, so I used an IUD before I had my tubes tied.

I never want kids, so I had the doc I worked for do my tubal Wink

I have used 2 IUD's. Mirena and Paragard copper IUD.

Mirena caused me to bleed every single day for the entire 18 months that I used it, so I stopped and switched to paragard. The bleeding did not bother me, but I actually became anemic, so it needed to go.

I used no painkillers for my mirena insertion, and while it was crampy, it was not as bad as I would have thought, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

My paragard IUD was done with narcotic painkillers, and I never felt a thing.

I got the Mirena IUD out a couple of days ago...

When I got it in, it hurt like a health forum. I have never had kids, so maybe that's why. It was nothing I couldn't handle, but it did hurt, and I took 3 Ibuprofen about an hour before the procedure. I would recommend this. And bring someone else to drive you home. I don't think I would've been able to.

Everybody experiences the symptoms from the progestin that it releases differently. I gained weight (although my doctor currently is checking my thyroid because of it) and was very moody, and had cramps for the whole 9 months I had it in. However, my doctor who took it out on wednesday thinks that maybe it wasn't in all the way and that's why I had all the cramping. You are expected to have cramping for a little while but not for as long as I did. My advice is to go to someone experienced because the health risks go down the more experienced the doctor is. Also, if you haven't had kids, you can get it put in, but I think there is just a greater risk of expulsion (the thing coming out) so check it often right away.

When I got it out, I barely felt it. It was really easy. I did like it because I never had to worry about getting pregnant at all, but the cramping was just too much to handle.

I hope this helps!! Good luck.

i have had a mirena coil for many months now and it is fantastic! i don't have any periods and no side effects but everyone is different. i was on the copper iud and bled heavily up to the point where i had to go to a & e.

the insertion for me was very painful when they clamped my cervix Shocked but it only lasts a few minutes and i think it a small price to pay for 5 years of birth control!

if you have any questions feel free to p.m me.

I have to mention that even though the Mirena IUD wasn't for me, I can definately understand why some people love it. I didn't have to worry about pregnancy at all and I never got my period. It was so convenient!!

Thank you all for your advise. I have decided to stick with the bcp's for now, been on them for 2 years and have had pretty good luck with them. Still considerin IUD, but will wait. (I wonder what my boyfriend thinks..I should ask), lol.
