I am bipolar, and now 5 months pregnant. I felt fine without my meds up until a few weeks ago. I have been suffering from mood swings like crazy. I saw the doc yesterday, there are NO studies done on antidepressants and mood stabilizers. It is just unethical to do that to a fetus. So not even a doctor can not tell u what u should do. My doc is leaving it up to me and I am still debating. And they wont usually offer anything until your 2nd trimester anyway. So you really need to discuss the pros and cons of it before you try to get pregnant. Because I never did now I am faced with this huge decision.

I'm Bipolar and I have given birth to two healthy babies. I discontinued all meds while I was pregnant and surprisingly did very well. I actually managed to be much more stable off meds and pregnant then on. My youngest is 6 months old and I just started back on meds this past month. I was starting to have anxiety attacks and depression which the doctor tied more to post partum than to my bipolar.

Most drugs that are used to stabilize manic depression are extremely harmful to an unborn child. There are drug classifications and I know there are a few that have less know side effects, but I chose to discontinue them altogether. Anything you ingest is crossed through the placenta to your unborn baby. My advice is to talk with your psychiatrist and therapist about you plans to become pregnant. They will know if you will be capable of discontinuing your medications.

I will go to my doctor first before I do anything. I do not want to do anything that wouldn't be good for me but definitely not for and unborn baby.
