Registered Nurses-can They Write & Sign a Perscription
Posted: 04-19-07 13:17pm

Recently I went to my doctor and needed my prescription refilled. I was told by the RN that the Dr. went on vacation and wouldnt be back for a week. I wasnt aware that he was leaving. I asked the RN if another Dr was on call and if he could call in my scrip since she was there to fax my chart to him. The thing that surprised me was that she ended up writing me a prescription and signing the Dr's name/then her name. Well, I came right home and found this site to see if what she did was illegal and if it is what should i do?? Im not going to fill the scrip until I get some advice from you. Im in between a rock and a hard place. I really need this filled, but I dont want to get in trouble if I do get it filled. Please get back to me ASAP. Thanks a lot for your time.........LISA Rolling Eyes

No, RNs are not allowed to do that. You should talk to your doctor about what she did.

I know that sometimes my doctor calls in prescriptions to the pharmacy, and when I go to pick it up, I don't even have a paper to show them. SO I don't know how that works either.

If you really need the medication, you can always go to the ER and have them make out something for you there legally.
