Dislocated My Jaw a Few Days Ago Posted: 04-19-07 15:09pm
I dislocated my jaw this past Sunday,
spent half the day in the emergency that
day - and finally was told that my x-rays
are fine, my jaw has been moved back in
place, and that it should be functioning
again in about 48 hours.
It has been five days since the incident
and I still can't fully open my mouth, the
left side of my jaw's joint is sticking
out when I try opening my mouth, and the
alignment of the jaw is still a bit off. I
also get clicking in both of my ears
sometimes.
Should I see a doctor? Will a dislocated
jaw heal back and act as if nothing even
happened or will I have problems now for
the rest of my life?
Thanks for any replies in advance.

Yes, please see a doctor as soon as
possible. Do not mention the letters TMJ
or TMJD to the doctor or he might refer
you to a dentist without really checking
you out. Have you been "babying" your jaw
- liquids, soft foods, resting it, ice and
moist heat? I believe this is crucial for
a faster recovery. You should be able to
heal with little or no effects depending
on how much damage has been done. That's
why I mention being gentle and you should
do so for several weeks (just like any
other dislocation or sprain).
I suggest you ask your doctor for a script
of Valium or Zanax for a couple of weeks.
Get good sleep and watch your head, neck
and shoulder posture (especially in front
of the computer). Check out the TMJ
Physical Therapy page at nismat.org for
some good basic info and pictures.
Take care and let us know how you make
out.
God bless...
