Suddden Hip Pain-slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis As Kid
Posted: 04-19-07 15:33pm

Question:
I had slipped capital femoral epiphysis as a child. Over the years I have experienced 'on occassion' the classic sysmptoms I did years ago. Buckling pain and "give out" in my hip along with tensed groin muscles. This would continue for no longer then 2 or 3 days and never on a consistent basis. It would happend MAYBE 1-3 times a day.
I have experienced consistant pain in the groin area, the classic sysmptoms I have had since I was 12. The difference this time is that this pain is very coinsistant and I can not walk more then 5 steps without experiencing a buckle or give out and my leg throbbs by the end of the day. Is this just a flare up or am I looking at something more serious? I have not been seen for this problem for ions. I am a 33 yo who is very scared at what may be down my road.
ANY HELP would be very much appreciated!!!!
Thank you!!

My advice to you would be to go and see an orthopedic specialist and get a hip x-ray done. Since you haven't been seen by a doctor in "ions," it would be good to just get an "update" on your hip and to allay any fears that you might have in the process.....I am about your age - I'm 33 - and over the last 3 years or so I have had alot of problems because of the scfe....The pain and discomfort you are feeling could very well be related to the joint defomity at your hip - depending on how severe the slip was when you were 12. As the anatomy of the hip is changed due to the slipped epiphysis, it's likely that the soft tissues in the area are going to be stressed in abnormal ways.........I myself have been having alot of problems with my right hip "clicking" and "popping" when I do certain movements or exercises......How bad was your slipped hip? How has it affected your life in a physical way since the age of 12? I've gone through alot of emotional issues due to this problem....It's really rough at times.....let me know if you need someone to talk to......

Megandarcey,

I am also experiencing this.
I was operated on between the ages of 11 and 15 having 7 operations in total (so far).
I read that the condition needs to be caught within 3 weeks of symptoms...I went a year without treatment. The Consultant sent me for physio on my knee as this is where the pain presented (even though my leg was almost pointing backwards.
So, I had both hips pinned, my left was the leg I had the epiphysis in but they pinned the right too. Then at a check up the Consultant he was pulling my leg about at angles it was not supposed to go and managed to pull it back out of joint.
Back to the operating theatre for an Osteotomy. I have to say I did have my pins and plate removed after all of this which I understand is not the best idea! I am in England.
Now at 30 I am getting knee pain and it feels like my hip is 'catching'. I have pain in my groin also.
I read last night about the degress of slipped epiphysis and realise I had a chronic condition which means I will almost certainly get severe arthritis most probably resulting in a hip replacement. I have numerous other conditions including Multiple Sclerosis, Hypermobility, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc syndrome and unstable ankles.

My advice to you is get to the Consultant ASAP. I am seeing my GP on Monday to try and get referred back to the Consultant for X Rays. The longer ou leave it the worse it can get.
I must add on a lighter note that I have had chronic pain in my hip over the last 20 years which resulted in nothing and the X rays showed that all was ok so fingers crossed.

My question to the forum is...
Has anyone had a relapse in their adulthood? If so, what can be done?
