tetanus shot after burn with knife ?
Posted: 04-22-07 22:04pm

Hello everyone, this is my first post. Last night, I was at a bonfire with a bunch of my friends. Some of my friends were messing around with a knife and were heating it over the fire. It turned red with heat. My friend picked it up and turned without realizing that my bare arm was directly behind him. It burned down a few lairs of skin and is basically just white. The area surrounding was fairly swollen but it never hurt THAT bad. Today, my arm is really sore, probably from chopping wood, but i'm paranoid that it might be tetanus. Is this possible? There was no blood, but the knife was around the dirt. I have had a tetanus shot within the last 2 years. I put bactine and neosporin on the wound within 2 hours and it has been covered for the past 24 hours. Do I have anything to be worried about?

welcome to ehealth.
I have to ask, does the muscles in your arm spasm or lock in a concentrated contraction? Clearly, my guess is you wouldn't get a tetanus shot if it didn't prevent from tetanuses. Like usually, if it gets seriously infectected then head to a doctor or a hospital.

No, it's not like that. The burn is located around my bicep, and the soreness is in my forearm, but there is no locking or spasms. I'm making sure to keep it extremely clean, any other ideas?

best thing with any health related problems, generally works with internal issues...but try not to dwell too much on it, because some dense pain such as what you describe can be psychological. Just to mention, I've severly sprained my ankle and I could feel pain in my toes and in my calfs. Mind you this, I haven't had my tetanus shot since I was in middle school...and that was well over 6 years ago. *knocks on wood* Sad
Though, I'm glad you're taking proper care of it. Like I said before, if it gets worse, notify your doctor.
