I'm moving, I don't know if I've mentioned
it here yet. Anyways, I catch my bus from
thompson to winnipeg on the last day of
april, and arrive in winnipeg on the
morning of the first of may (the year
anniversary of when I found out i was
pregnant!). The bus ride is going to be
nine hours... and then I have to go to
the airport and catch my plane to toronto.
the flight is around 2 hours long. I'm
wondering if you guys have any tips for
traveling with a baby? I'm soooooo
freaken nervous that she will be screaming
the whole time and everyone will be
staring. People will be staring enough
with me walking around with a baby being
so young. I don't care about what they
think really but i don't want to be
annoying to everyone on the bus and plane
and looking like a bad mother who doesn't
know what to do with her own child. any
tips anyone!?

I wish I did. Alyvia doesn't travel very
well, so I don't think I can help. But I
wish you luck, hon!
That's so exciting!! I hope everything
goes well for you hun =)
As for the travelling with a baby.. hmm
well it could be difficult, but what I'd
do is try and keep her awake as much as
possible beforehand so that she's more
likely to sleep on the journey. That's
easier said than done, I know. Sorry, I
wish I could be more helpful!

are u bringing her carseat and stroller?
if so, she might sleep the whole way.
thanks you two. she will probably be
sleeping for most of the bus ride zanny.
i'm mostly scared for the plane because
the ear popping will probably p*ss her off
so much it will take ages to get her to
calm down. she really is an angry little
girl!
oh i also ment to ask what do i do about
bottles? because i can't just make them
on the bus and i can't pack just the water
and mix them while we're on the go either
because she will only take them warm. she
pulls faces and spits out the milk when i
try to give them to her cool.
laura, i have my mom and sister in
belleville and most of my friends.
thompson is such a small town. and it's
winter for more than half the year because
we are so far up north. it's also got
really high crime rates and sh*tty
schools. it's just not a good place to be
really. i also figure no matter how much
i dislike him rowan needs erik in her
life, and he lives there so then her not
having a father around is not on my
conscious anymore. i'm going to go there
and stay with my mom (puke) but only until
i can get set up with an apartment and
assistance. i am also going back to high
school in the fall to get my grade 12, and
i already have rowan enrolled in day care
in my highschool in belleville. if i
can't get everything i need set up in
about a month i will just come back here
and finish my grade 12 here before heading
off to university. it's just this place
is seriously gloomy and depressing, and
even though i have some great friends i
will miss i just want out so bad.

and stroller? if so, she might sleep the
whole way.
the car seat i use for her is a friend's
which i have to return before leaving so i
have not figured out what to do about that
for the bus ride from thompson to winnipeg
and the cab from the bus depot to the
airport yet. i already have one on the
other end in toronto though so i don't
want to buy one just for the trip.
Sucking on a sweet is meant to help with
the ear popping business.. so maybe
sucking a pacifier would do the same job
for a baba.. I don't know though, I'm only
guessing.

Thats tricky about the car seat...you
could see if you could get a cab that has
a car seat in it. I know here in N.S.
there are some cab companies that have car
seats and all you have to do is request a
cab with one.
It sounds like you have a plan, and
everything seems to be coming together
nicely for you!
Good luck with the move, and I hope
everything works out great for you!

When I travelled from Manchester U.K. to
Canada 2 years ago with an 18 month old.
I packed a bag full of entertaining stuff,
candy drinks anything that would be
needed. Tylenol for children just in
case.
Childrens books, favourite toys.....saying
that I forgot how old you said your child
was????

I don't know if they do disposible bottles
here in Canada, but that is what I used
with a few 250ml ready made cartons of
baby milk that I purchased in the drug
store. I also took a flask with hot water
to warm the bottle in a jug that I also
brought with me.
Am I a bit anal???? I think so!!

you can get bottle warmers at walmart! or
whever you go up there
so you can just put a bottle of water in
the thing and itll be warm when you wanna
use it and she'll eat!
this might sound horrible... i hope it
doesnt... but when we went on vacation a
few years ago with the triplets... in the
car... from nebraska to texas we took
benadryl or however you spell it. with
triplets in a car for that long, it was
needed. it made them to go sleep for a
little while and they werent fighting or
screaming their heads off anymore... it
did work. i dont see anything wrong with
it because it didnt hurt them, it just
made them take a nap for a little while
beecause if you've ever ben with kids in
cars, especially 3 2 year olds you know
how it is. i dunno.

If you can get her to sleep through the
plane ride it would be the best bet.
Airplane rides are so hard on little ones
ears because they don't know what is going
on except their ears are plugging up and
pooping. I just took my boys to disneyland
and they were on their first plane ride
and the one thing they hated about the
plane ride was the fact that their ears
hurt, and that they kept popping. I had
them chewing gum to help but yours of
course is a bit to young for gum. So a
pacifer, bottle or even your finger might
help. But sleeping is so much better. Good
luck.

not all babies ears pop cuz macy has been
on a plane 9 times since she was a month
old and she never had a problem. liam only
has issue on the way down. if she uses a
paci the sucking motion can keep her ears
from popping

Macysmama (forgot name, sorry), Macy and
Liam are very lucky kids:)
My lil' one was on about 8 plane rides
(usually from AZ to WA) and drove across
country twice before he was three years
old - not fun. This is not counting all
the other extremely long drives we have
all taken.
People here have given great suggestions.
The plane ride is the trickiest due to the
ears. We tried to schedule the airplane
ride around his usual nap time, which was
harder when he was around three months. We
also did our best to keep him awake until
the plane ride. We gave him the bottle
during take off and landing. It did seem
to work but our son still had some
discomfort. He usually cried but sometimes
it really wasn't that bad. It was usually
worse when landing. We also gave him some
benedryl and that seemed to work.
Everyone has their opinions on using
benedryl but it helped my son. When he got
older, we packed some of his favorite
snacks and gave it to him only during take
off and when we were landing. He was so
into his snacks, he didn't seem to notice
the pressure as much.
Driving across country, I packed all sorts
of goodies. We bought new toys that Nathan
has never seen before and gave it to him
throughout the trip. He is such a good
little traveler because we have traveled
so much.
Oh, I don't know about the bus ride but
when we were on a plane ride, we asked for
hot water to soak the bottle in...our son
did not like cold milk. We actually had
the flight attendant fill the throw up bag
with hot water and then we placed the milk
in the bag for a few minutes. It worked
wonderful!!
It will be a bit stressful but if she
starts to get fussy, just do the best you
can. The people who get the most annoyed
are usually ones who have never had kids.
They don't understand. All the other
mothers will smile (or may try to give
you some unsolicitated advice). At least
you know some people understand. You both
will be just fine!!

I think she'll be fine. I have traveled a
lot, both with and without my daughter.
Speaking from experience I never mind the
little one that cries, especially when the
parent is doing everything within their
power to comfort them. It's the little
ones that cry and screech and their
parents just ignore them, or .God forbid
yell at them making it so much worse.
.Tanya you seem to be a very dedicated
mom, and I'm sure you will do a great job
on your trip.
I think the paci or a bottle idea during
take off and landing is a good idea.
