Q: Glucose Test...

I took my glucose test last .Thursday (had to drink the lovely orange sugar drink). My doctor just called me and said that I didn't pass the blood test - my sugar levels were at 175, and the highest they like to see is 135. She also said my iron is low, so she wants me to start taking an iron supplement along with my prenatal vitamins.

Anyhoo, I get to go back in on .Friday for the 3-hour diabetes screening. I'm not too worried about it though... a few people i know have had to do the same thing, and their screening came out fine. But has anyone else had to do the 3-hour screening? And how did the results come out? I'm just trying to prepare, just in case.

And who else is signed up for childbirth classes??? Daren and i are starting on .april 30th, and it's every .monday night for 4 weeks. I'm really excited about it Laughing .

I didn't have the 3 hour test, but I have heard that you drink a bottle of the orange drink every hour instead of one. Good luck with it!!!

I really dreaded the glucose test because of the horror stories about the drink. I actually liked it Rolling Eyes

I had to take the 3-hour glucose test about 3 years ago...it wasn't due to pregnancy though. Turned out, I had hyploglycemia (low-blood sugar). I'm not sure about having to drink an orange drink every hour though. I didn't have to do that. I just drank the one and they took blood every hour for 3 hours. It was awful sitting in the doctors office all morning, so I would suggest taking a good book with you!! Good luck and hope all turns out well.

I really didn't mind the drink either... It was just sooo carbonated I sat in a waiting room with all elderly people burping l;ike a mad man... I couldn't stop. They were already looking at me when i first got there with my big gut at 18 ... and the looks of disgust I got at that first belch were hilarious Razz

.

A good friend of mine didn't pass her initial test and had to go back for the three hour test. She told me that she had to drink more of the orange drink, but now I can't remember how many she had to drink. They did take blood every hour of the three hours though. She ended up testing positive for gestational diabetes. She had to go on a special diet and she was able to control it. now that she had the baby, the diabetes has gone away. She only had it while she was pregnant.

Good luck with your test

Yeah, they told me I can't have anything but water after 8 pm the night before the test. And then .i'll be stuck in the doctor's office from 8 am to noon. i am going to be sooo hungry!

And i didn't really mind the orange drink either. it reminded me of a very, very sweet triaminic (anyone else know what i'm talking about??). mine wasn't carbonated though.

i'll just die if i can't have sweets for the rest of my pregnancy. i swear, sometimes it's the only thing that keeps me sane!!!

Lol, i was going to ask you the same thing. i don't know if we have to drink more before we go in. but i just left a message at my doctor's office, so we'll see what they say. they took my blood at 8:45 am, and come to think of it, the last thing i had to eat was some ice cream around 8:00 the night before Embarassed . Wow, i'm bad! Hopefully that's why mine came back high Laughing .

Ok, the nurse just called me back and she said *do not* drink anymore of the glucose before going in. they want us to fast because they're going to take our blood when we first go in (to see what the sugar levels are normally) and then we have to drink a whole bottle of the glucose in the office. then i think they take our blood after one, two and three hours.

Yeah, I thought it was no food after midnight.

I think as long as you don't eat or after midnight you'll be fine. I ate sour worm candy the night before and my blood came back at 110, so if yours its that high, you may have something to worry about.

Good luck

I went in last week for the 1 hour screening so I don't know yet if I passed or not. The drink kinda tastes like Orange crush. I didn't mind it but it made me burp too! I was curious about the Glucose Tolerance Test in case I don't pass and I found this information:

For eight to 14 hours before the test, you can't eat or drink anything but sips of water (and you're not supposed to smoke or exercise either), so you'll want to schedule it for first thing in the morning.

When you arrive for the test, the technician will take a blood sample to measure your "fasting blood glucose level" and then ask you to drink either a more concentrated dose or a larger volume of the glucose solution. Then brace yourself for three more arm pricks, as your blood is tested every hour for the next three hours. The technician should alternate arms each time she draws your blood.

You'll definitely need something to distract you this time, because you'll have to stay seated in the waiting room between blood drawings. And bring something to eat right after your final blood sample is drawn because you'll probably be starving.

If one of the readings is abnormal, you may have to take another test later in your pregnancy. Or your practitioner may ask you to make some changes in your diet and exercise routine. If two or more of your readings are abnormal, you'll be diagnosed with gestational diabetes and you'll need to talk to your practitioner about a treatment plan.

.i'm taking the test on .friday and my due date is .july 9th. my older sister had gestational diabetes with her last 2 babies. the first go-round wasn't bad for her... she just had to watch her diet. but with her last baby, she had to take insulin injections every day. she was miserable. like i said though, i'm not going to worry about it too much until i get the results back. i will definitely bring a book or two with me to make the time pass!

Dang, then maybe i'm just some freak of nature or something! Your blood sugar was really that low after eating whoppers? Hmm... well, i guess we'll just have to wait and see what this test on .friday says.
