Erectile Dysfunction. Physical Or Psychological? Posted: 04-25-07 17:49pm
I have a question. Several years ago, I
had a bad anxiety issue. So bad that I
couldnt leave my house without having
panic attacks.
Since then I have kicked the anxiety, but
the ED problems seemed to stick around. I
could get erections, but they never seemed
as hard, or id lose em real easy.
I started taking horny goat weed and
arginmax lately, and to no real surprise I
dont think it helped. So then I decided to
stop watching porn regularly, hoping it
may make getting turned on easier without
being so used to seeing the stimulating
images and acts on my TV.
So recently, I notice I have been able to
get very hard when just thinking of
actually having sex(the thoughts alone
without touching it)
It stays hard as long as I keep thinking
of these acts.
However if I let my mind wander to
anything not sex related, i can go soft in
15 to 20 seconds.
Its been so long that I cant remember how
long is normal to lose an erection when ya
stop thinking of the sexual acts.
Does it sound like it was just
psychological? And maybe my problems after
my anxiety left was just from me worrying
I couldnt maintain an erection?
Or does losing my erection within 15 to 20
seconds after I stop thinking of having
sex, seem to fast, and mean a possible
physical problem?
Like I said, I can lay there thinking of
sex and stay very hard without touching.
Its just if i dont touch and my mind
wanders, its gone fairly quick.
Thanks!

I don't think it's unusual to loose an
erection when not thinking about sex.

Ohh, ok. I didnt know if it was normal to
lose it within 15 seconds or so after I
stop thinkin about it. Like I said, its
been years since I had that anxiety issue,
so I cant remember how it was when I was
normal.
Maybe it will be a whole different story
when im in a real sitiation with a girl
again.

I think when you're actually in a sexual
situation, your penis will act just fine
You'll never know
until then.
Some guys loose erections quickly, others
like my fiancee have to focus intently
just to get them to go away!

I appreciate the confidence.
I was getting frustrated again, because I
kept concentrating after my original post,
and couldnt get erect.
Yet today I concentrated, and got an
erection, that stayed quite awhile.
But then tonight I tried again, and very
limited success. Then when I did, it was
gone quick again.
I think maybe I am just expecting to walk
around able to get a rock hard erection on
command. LOL. I also recently gave up
porn, so I am thinking thoughts alone make
it more difficult as well. Because I used
to watch porn atleast once a day.
But this all sounds psychological,
correct? Since I was erect, and was erect
for awhile today?

You can go to your regular doctor just to
rule out any physical problems, but like
eiri, I don't think you really sound
abnormal. I have seen men get and lose an
erection a few times in just a matter of
minutes. If physical problems are ruled
out, and it really starts to give you a
problem, you could talk to a therapist
about it. Keep in mind that sometimes
when you think about this stuff too much
and put too much pressure on yourself,
that's what's actually holding you back!

Losing erections is normal. Their purpose
is to become rigid enough to penetrate a
woman's vagina for sex. If you're not
engaged in a sexual activity or thinking
about sex, there's really no reason for
them to stick around. That's not to say
you won't become erect for no reason, or
stay hard without consciously thinking
about sex. Otherwise, it's normal.
So please don't avoid sexual situations,
because you think you may have ED. And if
you have a little problem when with a
woman, don't worry about it. It's normal
and usually just caused by nerves. After
being with the woman a few times you'll
begin to relax better and won't have
problems.

Well, this worry comes from my worries
where in past sexual situations(after my
anxiety issues from my past), id have to
get hard, and quick put it in her vagina
before it went soft. Sometimes i didnt
even have enough time to put the condom on
before it went soft.
If I was in her and having sex it atleast
stayed hard enough to have sex.
Of course this was also during the peak of
my porn addiction, and I often found
myself having to think of porn so I could
ejaculate.
Ive also had times I went a bit soft in
her and the condom slipped off. But like I
said, this was during my porn addiction,
and after my erection problems beguns
during a period of anxiety attacks. The
fact it started during anxiety attack
period, is why im so hopeful its just
psychological.
In the past week or so, I have completely
given up porn. And I dont masturbate as
much. I notice when I think of sexual
situations, sometimes I become erect,
sometimes I dont. Also sometimes it goes
soft fast, other times it stays for
several minutes after i stop the deep
concentrating. It may be rock hard during
deep concentrating and just alittle under
rock hard when not concentrating. Im
hoping its just a matter of how turned on
I am.
Does this sound like I might be improving
and it was just psychological? Im hoping
the porn, and worrying I always did might
have just messed me up some.
Im only so worried, because I am going
away in 2 weeks, and me and my new
girlfriend are planning to have sex, and I
dont wanna embarrass myself. Im hoping I
will get rock hard and all will be well!

It does sound psychological and it seems
that you are improving a lot. Let your
girlfriend know about this! That way, if
you can't stay hard, you can just pleasure
her orally and drive her wild

I have spoken to her about it, and told
her if I do have a problem, I would
pleasure her orally.
She completely understands, and is being
very helpful about it. She has even given
me some confidence, and told me she is
sure she will make me hard for
intercourse. LOL.
Someone on another forum told me
masturbating too much can cause a hormonal
imbalance. Any truth to that? Thanks!

Also.....I havent noticed any morning
erections when i wake up in awhile. Then
again I dont dream much at all.
Once in awhile when I wake up in the
middle of an erotic dream, I have an
erection. But thats rare. Im hoping maybe
I just usually wake up after the erection.
And I am hoping that waking up in the
middle of erotic dreams on those rare
occasion, and having an erection, could
possible be a good sign!

That is absolutely not true. Masturbation
has no ill effect on the body or mind.

I think it certainly is a good sign; it
means that your unconscious is becoming
comfortable with sexuality again.

Yeah, I was lacking dreams, so I assumed
maybe thats why I dont really get morning
erections. But on the rare occasion I do
get an erotic dream, and i mean very rare,
if I wake up in the middle of it, I do
indeed have an erection.
May I ask how ya know so much? You seem to
jave alot of knowledge. Do you work in the
field? Or just very educated from so much
you find on the forums? Either way you are
very helpful. Thanks!
