My 19 year old son was 10 minutes into
some basketball hoops when he experienced
some shortness of breath. He cam home and
laid down. About 10 minutes later, and
iwthin 2 minutes or so he developed an
intense headache, accompanied by fever and
intense cold and shivering. So intense was
the headache that I was unable to drive
him to hospital and I called the
paramedics. They came immediately and in a
few minutes the fever was gone andthe
headache subsided somewhat. I took him to
hospital emergency and over the course of
10 hours there, he was given a CT and
Lumbar Puncture (LP) which were both
negative, ruling out things like anurysm
and meningitis. That is what we were told.
We were also told that the LP would result
in backache and additional headache for
about 5 days. The headaches persisted for
5 days as promised, which we treated with
Tylenol 3. It is noe gradually subsiding,
and we hope it will do so totally.
Question: What caused it in hte first
place?

What a scary thing for a parent to
experience!
When the paramedics arrived did they check
his blood pressure? If so, what was it?
Did the hospital say anything about him
being dehydrated?
Did they do any ekg by chance?
Sorry for the questions, they are just
basics and the easiest to start with.

Thaks for your concern and reply. Yes it
was scary.
His blood pressure was 124/68. The ECG was
quite normal. The hospital did not say
anything about being dehydrated.
Thanks for listening.

Well, his blood pressure was good. When
you blood pressure spikes you can get a
horrible headache in responce, which is
why I asked.
Dehydration can cause severe headaches,
body weakness and even black outs. But it
is usually a more gradual experience then
what you described.
Do you know if he has any allergies, or
has recently started any medications?

Hope all is better with your son! I had a
similar experience when i was in my early
twenties. Instead of basketball I wound up
in a wrestling match with a buddy. Ten
miutes later, all the symptoms were there.
Plus nausea. While I didn't go to the ER,
I remember wishing I would just pass out
so it would all go away. I should have
gone to the ER. The symptoms stayed for
several days. Anyway, I told my family doc
about a week or two later and she asked if
I had been out partying the night before.
Which I had been. She attributed that as a
likely cause. I know he is only nineteen,
but is there any chance he could have been
out drinking prior to the incident?
