Broken Femur That Has Stopped Healing!! Help!! Posted: 04-27-07 16:52pm
Hey guys I have looked at several post and
find very helpful info. So here I am
asking for help. I shattered my femur in a
car accident back in jan. After surgery
with a rod and 3 screws and a plate in my
knee, here I am. Things were going good up
till now. I just returned from the dr with
bad news. Dr says that my femor has
stopped healing. No improvement noted over
the last 6 weeks. So he has cut back on my
therapy to just 2 times a week instead of
3. And he'll see me back in 8 weeks. I
don't want to wait 8 weeks and still be
down if there is something that i can do
to help my bone start healing again.
Anybody got any suggestions?? Please help
I am open to all!!!

Do What Your Dr Says. Posted: 04-30-07 15:07pm
Diet is such an important thing to
remember but hard to follow. If you drink
alcohol I would encourage you to cut way
back. If you are up and moving too much,
slow down. Get off the pain meds ASAP.
At 6 weeks my Dr had me at 25% body
weight. That meant I was on crutches or
walker and just doing toe touching that
gave me balance. By week 10 I was at 100%
body weight. When you start to add weight
to the leg, it actually promotes bone
growth. It has been a year since my
accident and I have negligible limitations
now. I was really good about doing my PT
on my own 2-4 times daily. I took protein
supplements and drank lots of milk for the
calcium. I would also suggest that
perhaps the follow-up x-rays may not have
been as accurate as possible. Do not get
discouraged as your next films may show
substantial progress. Just hang in there
and you will be in my prayers.

Has your doctor talked at all about using
a bone growth stimulator? They often use
these when bones do not heal well. Did he
say what the percentage of healing was
thus far?
