Choking Sensation, Tightness In a Throat, Please Help Posted: 04-29-07 08:37am
I've been experiencing choking sensation
and tightness in a throat for a few months
now. Anything around the neck (clothes,
chain, even the belt in car),
sometimes bending or tight clothes around
the waist cause choking. Laryngoscopy,
gastroscopy are OK. Found small nodule on
my thyroid. (ENT wants to do the biopsy
under the U/S, but he says he doesn't
think it is the cause of my symptoms). So
far no answers and no help. Started to get
depressed. Anyone who knows anything about
these symptoms please help!
The choking sensation is definitely
uncomfortable. Do u suffer from dysphagia?
(diff. swallowing) Could it be possible
that you talk to your GP about a referral
to an allergist? Maybe you're allergic to
something that causes that reaction. Do
you get Short of breath? If you do, all
these are valid reaons to give your GP or
specialist another visit and tell them all
about the symptoms.
I hope you feel better soon. Don't feel
hopeless. Tests are still being run. And
I'm sure they'll come up with something
soon. I'm happy to talk with you if you
want to talk.
Good luck. Look on the bright side.

I don't know about the bending over part,
but what you describe sounds alot like
Globus Hystericus. It's an anxiety
disorder that causes the throat to tighten
up. It feels like there is something
choking you or stuck in the back of your
throat. If you have collars that are close
to your throat they are uncomfortable. I
have had it for years on and off. It acts
up for me more when it's cold, or when I
am stressed about something, but it can
come on for no reason. Takes a while to
get rid of, but eventually, it does go
away. Sometimes the doctor can give you
muscle relaxants to stop the throat muscle
from clenching up. If you can provide a
few more details it would help.

Throat tightness Posted: 04-10-08 19:22pm
Hi! To tell you the truth, it's been years
since I went to the doctor for this so I
honestly don't remember what the
medication was, just that it was a muscle
relaxant. Isn't it awful? I don't get it
all that often anymore, thank goodness,
but now I have a new thing...it started
when I got really sick on a trip in 2003.
Now I feel like there is a clog in the
back of my throat, between my sinuses and
my actual throat. It's ALWAYS there, and
when I get a bad cold, I have alot of
mucus that I have to gag up. I went to
three doctors and none of them were able
to help me. Just got off being sick for
almost three months, and though the rest
of me is better, the clog just won't
leave! If it keeps up, it's back to the
doctor for me. I thought it was a nodule
or polyps, but the doctors said no before,
so now I am thinking allergies. I know my
nose always feels like it wants to run!
Good Lord, we are a mess, aren't we?
Don't fret, yours will leave you in time.
Whenever you get that feeling, raise your
head alittle and slowly breath in and out
deeply. That seemed to help me some.
Hope it works for you too! Take care!

same here.... except it tightens and i
feel a scratchy feeling in the back of my
throat.... almost as if there is a spider
in there... haha its funny but it scares
the crap out of me... I would look into
self-hypnosis... I can get rid of almost
all of my anxiety/panic attacks using
self-hypnosis... the only hard part is
getting them to stop completely...
self-hypnosis i have found helps short
term like clonazipam or xanax... it
doesn't get rid of the problem

throat closes up Posted: 05-25-08 00:43am
my throat also feels swollen, like there
is something in it that needs to come up.
I first noticed this 33 years ago. When I
was treated for depression it went away,
but lately under stress it comes back. I
read about throat exercises that you can
google. They are supposed to help with
anxiety, snoring, and sleep apnea. So I
am going to try them. I am always wanting
to eat and drink hot tea, as this helps as
long as I am doing it, but am gaining
weight, so I am using gravol...which helps
some.

choking sensation Posted: 08-30-08 06:18am
I have this choking/blockage feeling on
and off for about 5 yrs. I have panic
disorder so....I think I make it worse in
my mind. Anyway, I am having a really
hard time with it right now! I have never
had it checked other than normal
check-ups. I am to scared! I also feel
as if there is something stuck in my ear.
I did have this checked and they found
nothing but the pharmacist said it sounds
like the tube from the ear to the sinus
may have a blockage such as normal
drainage and that it happens frequently to
people. Not sure all I know is it makes
my panic attacks worse because I am unable
to let it go!

Hypnotherapy helped Posted: 09-03-08 16:44pm
I've been having this same chocking
sensation for about 4 years, it started
when I moved to another city after getting
married and was looking for a job. I
talked to my doctor about it back then, I
had a barium swallowing test, MRI,
neurologist check up, speech therapy, none
of that helped, my speech therapist
suggested it was stress/anxiety
related..in the beginning I didn't think
so but as time went by I was conviced that
in fact it was due to anxiety..after all
it took me 8 months to find a job and this
was really stressing and depressing
me..when I finally started working it got
better but did not completely go away (by
the way..I've never actually chocked
during meals), I did notice though..that
when I was very busy I was able to eat
fine..almost like my mind was so busy
thinking that it didn't have time to go
into chocking mode. About 2 years ago I
decided to give hypnotherapy a try and it
did help a lot, although the feeling,
again..diminished but didn't fully go
away, I think I'll give hypnotherapy
another shot and at the same time keep
looking, I hate to go through 50 more
years thinking that I'll choke at any
meal. I do notice that it's worse when we
are at a restaurant or have guests for
dinner..so in my case it's definitely
anxiety related.
Good luck to everyone and if anyone finds
a good solution don't forget to come back
and share with the rest of us!
