Elevated Ast, Alt, Ggt, Prolactin But Not Alp Posted: 04-30-07 03:54am
Hi I need advice form a doc or any
competent person who has good knowledge of
cause of elevated liver enzymes and
prolactin. Couple of days ago I decided I
take blood work to see if things are
normal. I test Hemoglobin, total
bilirubin, ALP, AST, ALT, GGT, glucose
fasting, HDL, LDL, TSH, Testosterone,
Triglyceride, Estradiol, and Prolactin.
Every thing came back in range except for
Hemoglobin, AST, ALT, GGT, and Prolactin.
Hemoglobin was slightly high 166g/L the
high range is 165g/L. ALP was normal at
77U/L however, AST was slightly elevated
at 49U/L and ALT and GGT where almost
double at the high range at 108 U/L and
105 U/L respectively. Prolactin was also
double the high range at 29.8 ug/L.
I am a 23 male. 2.5 months ago I came off
of anabolic steroids cycle which I was
using for ~15months. I used Testosterone
Enanthate, Nanadrolone (NPP), Boldenone,
Oxandrolone, HCG and Trenbolone acetate. I
also took an estrogen antagonist,
aeromedix (Temoxifin) as an anti-estrogen.
Ok before you jump to conclusion and blame
my elevated liver enzyme values on steroid
abuse let me explain that injectable
testosterone and nandrolone are amongst
the safest anabolic drugs when it comes to
liver specially nandrolone. This leaves
oxandolone and Aromidex. I have used
oxandrolone number of time and yes my
liver had been elevated but slightly and
it returned to normal couple of week after
I stop using it. Aeromedix has been
associated with nasty liver problems in
the past which I was not aware of it since
now. I used it for more than 9 months. I
have no data on HCG, so I can only
speculate that it is not as detrimental to
liver as Aeromedix since pregnant female
exert HCG in their urine at ridiculous
amount. But seeing that millions of female
are treated for breast cancer with
Aeromedix and are on the drug for longer
period than I have been, I don’t think
the associated elevated liver values with
Aeromedix is of a concern (I maybe
wrong).
Also I can not explain the elevated
prolactin level. However I have a
hypothesis about the AST and ALT. I took
the test 2 months after anabolic steroid
discontinuation. I did not work out or eat
properly since I was very busy at school
and exams. I believe the combination of
muscle catabolism and discontinuation of
anabolic agent along with bad diet and
stress from school has resulted in break
down of my muscle tissue resulting in
increase in AST and ALT since these
chemical are also released from the muscle
as result of catabolism. But this does
not explain why my GGT is high! Also
increase in total bilirubin is result of
steroid induced liver problems. My total
bilirubin is very low! Also I was on
medication minocycline for the whole time.
Maybe that minocycline contributed? Also I
have experience dry itchy skin ever since,
maybe this is an indication of a liver
problem. I used couple application of
Hydrocortisone containing cream when the
doctor misdiagnosed me with yeast
infection. I discontinued it when I notice
multiple severe sharp pain from my
abdominal area, NOT near my liver, in the
middle a little lower than the stomach. I
still have the pains but it is a lot
better now. I recently noticed sharp pain
in my upper chest both on right and left
site, which is why I took the test for
cholesterol to see if I was at risk for
cardiovascular disease.
I also heard that high consumption of fast
foods leads to increase in liver enzymes.
I have been eating them in the past month
since I did not have time to prepare food.
To which extent this is true I don’t
know, I have yet to see a scientific
research that show to which extent fast
foods can have an effect on the liver
values.
Also I took some glutamine the night
before the test maybe that had some effect
on the test results?
Anyways, if anyone knows of a case where
ALP has not been elevated but ALT and GGT
were double the normal range and AST was
slightly elevated along with doubling of
prolactin please let me know I appreciate
it. Tomorrow I am taking another exam to
measure the liver enzyme mentioned above
plus LDH and CPK.
It is sad since most of the doctors that I
know of are very incompetent or simple do
not want to help, they simply dismiss my
problem by just adding another drug to the
list or they don’t want help because I
used anabolic agents. I find it funny that
my doctor didn’t know what prolactin
was.
Thanks

i'm afraid i don't know ebough about
steroid use to help you on the cause of
your liver test results (however i can
read it up!)
what i can tell you though is that it is
possible (and common) to get raised
ALT/AST with a normal ALP.
the reason is that AST and ALT are liver
enzymes, whereas ALP comes from the
biliary tree (bile ducts). therefore if
something is affecting your liver but not
your biliary tree, then your liver enzyme
results might be high, but the ALP may
remain normal.
of course, some things affect both as they
are structurally and funtionally related -
and this would result in raised ALP as
well as AST/ALT.
