Bleeding During Intercourse
Posted: 05-01-07 12:26pm

I am a 21 year old female, who has had few sexual partners. I have been tested for STDs and other problems, before, during, and after being with any partner. I have also insisted they be tested. My current boyfriend of one year and I have problems with me bleeding during intercourse. He is more endowed than any of my previous boyfriends, and at first sex was difficult, if not impossible. My doctored advised that nature would "take it's course".

The problem is I still often bleed during sex. It is not rough sex. Sometimes I see a tear around my vaginal opening, but it heals quickly and we abstain while it does. This time there was no visible tear, but I bled and noticed some flesh-like bits in the toilet afterward.

It is not menstrual blood, and I am not pregnant. My hymen has grown back in the past, but I have been active within the last month.

I am taking a low-dose birth control pill. 3 months ago I was on a high dose pill. no noticable changes in between. I have a 3.5cm ovarian cyst on my left. I am active in my life, and I eat well. I have a possible thyroid condition (to be explored further by my doctor). I have an anxiety disorder which leads to tension, however I do not feel uncomfortable with my partner, and he is very thoughtful with foreplay and preparation. We always use a water-based lubricant. I have been tested again for an STD in the past 3 months.

This concerns me greatly. and any advice would be appreciated. I have seen my doctor but he seems to think it is "natural" and a result of size differences. I am not sure if that should be the case after a year of activity. It has been comfortable and problem free at times, but infrequently.

I don't know what to say; it seems that you have a very problematic hymen; but this is what is natural for you. Your hymen is supposed to be how it is.

I don't know what could be done aside from an operation that removed enough of the hymen and stitched it in such away that it wouldn't grow back onto itself. That would be an extreme step.

You might try stretching instead, as opposed to breaking as has been happening.

That does sound like a possibility for sure, I'm just not sure if it could be my hymen if it happens after only a week or two of abstinence. If this is the case I'm not about to get surgery, but I worry whether this is ok if it is natural or if this is very harmful or serious. We have tried different positions, using more lubricant, different brands etc. It just does not seem safe to me that I would have this issue after so long and so much care. I am frustrated with my doctor not looking into this. The dilation treatment had previously been recommended, but I am not sure what it involves, and it sounds a bit extreme to me.

I would see another doctor just to get a second opinion.
