Gallbladder??
Posted: 05-08-07 13:25pm

I have been having pain in my right side under the bottom part of my ribs, and pain that goes from there to my back and up the middle of my back between my shoulder blades...This has been going on for about 1 year, when it started, the pains would come and go, might lasts for a couple of days every month. Now the pains started about 2 months ago and have not went away and now I have very bad nausea...I have had a gallbladder ultrasound done, x-rays, tests for kidney stones and ct, all have been normal.
Any suggestions??

Did they do a hidascan to check for gallbladder function? That would be my next suggestion.

No they have not done a hidascan yet, I have made an appointment with a GI specialist, so far all the other doctors that I have seen are primarly looking for stones.

Sometimees the gall bladder can function improperly, presenting the same type of pain that peolpe have when they have gallstones. When they do a hidascan, they inject a radioactive isotope which attaches itself to the bile contained in your gall bladder. then they give you a hormone called cholesistokinin which causes your gall bladder to eject the bile that it holds. Failure to empty appropriately (ejection fraction) can be determined by calculation of the isotope as it exits. If the ejection fraction is too low, thenyou are said to have a "sluggish" or improperly functioning gall bladder. the result is a sludge that accumulates and causes you pain. The scan can hurt as much as an attack, though. I hope you find some answers. If they don't mention this test, at least make a point of bringing it up.

I have had a hida scan done, and my ejection fraction was 7% my doctor said this is very abnormal and the only solution is to have my gallbladder removed, so I'm going to have the surgery soon.

If anyone is having the same symptoms that I have had, I suggest having a hida scan done, its the only way to find out if the gallbaldder is not working as it should, some doctors told me if I didn't have stones - then nothing was wrong with my gallbladder, this is not true.. My G.I. doctor said that anything with an ejection fraction under 35% is abnormal.
