Hard to breathe with cold & sore throat Posted: 05-09-07 06:13am
I have a cold & sore throat.no big deal on
its own. However, this morning i found it
incredibly hard to breathe (this was in
throat, near voice box), and it was very
noisy while i was gasping for breath. I do
not have a cough, am not short of breath
(apart from the incident which lasted a
couple of minutes), and my throat is very
dry. I was sleping upright at the time.
Please can you let me know what the
problem was, and anything i should do to
avoid it happening again.

Given the symptoms you report (having
something in the throat in the morning
that makes it difficult to breathe for a
few minutes,) you might have experienced a
laryngeal spasm or perhaps some mucus got
stuck in the larynx for short time. A sore
throat can provoke that type of incident.
Therefore, you can start treating the
sore throat with local antiseptics.
Antibiotics could be also required. You
can visit your primary health provider to
follow up and for diagnostic tests.
