Scared... Amenorrhea ... Help Please Several Questions

For years i've mentioned to the ob when
i'd go in that I hadn't had a period in
years, they'd ask why, i'd say I didn't
know, I thought it might be the birth
control pills, and they would say
nothing.
i was on ortho-novum 35 for about 16 years
then microgestin the last 2.
no period in years, at least 7.
thought the doctors would tell me it was a
problem, so I didn't worry about it.
And i've read various things on the
internet that birth control pills can
cause amenorrhea, plus the bc hand outs ay
period can skip, another reason why I
didn't worry about it.
One Dr. Last year had me take a blood
test, she said if it came out fine it was
probably the pill.
I even told my new ob about it, after
being off the pill for 9 weeks and still
no period. He just told me last week that
it's not normal, should have been getting
some periods, at least light ones.
So now they gave me progesterone to try to
induce bleeding.
2x since I stopped my pills my breasts got
sore, and I had cramps. No bleeding.
So... I need to know
#1 can amenorrhea happen or not from
prolonged use (18 years) on the birth
control pills I was on? Stopped getting
periods after around 9-11 years.
*2 is it true that women sometimes have
amenorrhea coming off of the pill?
#3 did my soreness and cramps mean
anything?
#4 I had a painful simple cyst (5cm
diameter) they did an ultrasound for a
while ago. No mention of anything else
going on in my ovaries, though now I don't
trust them to have said anything. Would
this indicate other fertility problems?
#3 what does this mean? I am terrified
this might mean I am infertile.

In my experience:
Going off of the pill can cause some delay
in the return of your period. The
progesterone they gave you should induce
bleeding in a few days. If not then you
need to call them. They may do a second
round.
Ovarian cysts can stop you from
menstrating. And are treated with birth
control. (Sorry) That really is the only
thing that is used to treat them. Did you
get a cyst while on the pill or after you
stopped using them?
Going off the pill can mess with you body
and cause you to have sore breasts and
some cramping. That is completely normal.
(I personally, feel this way with a cyst
as well. Though that may be in my head as
I have never heard anyone else say that)
Sorry that I couldn't be of more help.

I had a large simple cyst (5 CM diam) when
I was on microgestin (while I was on the
pill).
Do you have any idea if the pill might
have been what caused me to not get
periods while I was on them (7 out of 18
years)? I am hoping this is possible, and
my problems now might be what you
mentioned- post-pill stuff...
thank you for your response. any
feedback/information at this time is a
huge help!

The pill (especially low dose) is known to
make your periods lighter and shorter and
in some women they can stop all together.
However, I am not sure if it is normal for
them to be stopped for that length of
time. If your doctors were not concerned
then I would say it must happen.
Have you started the progesterone yet?

When did they find the cyst? Maybe it
needs to be looked at again. I had a
large ovarian cyst that caused me to miss
periods and it wasn't found until it was
too big to treat with anything except
aspiration or laparotomy. The doctors
said I had probably had it for several
years. They ended up removing it and my
fallopian tube and ovary by laparotomy.
I'm not saying that's what it is, just
maybe you could get that checked again. I
wish they had found mine before I got
pregnant because I ended up having surgery
when I was 22 weeks. Anyway, just a
thought. Hope you get everything figured
out.

I presume you mean your gyn -
gynaecologist.
an ob is an obstetrician who deals with
pregnancy and the like.
a lot do both but you'd be seeing a gyn
unless you are pregnant.
and s/he is giving you progesterone to
induce bleeding? funny - progesterone
stops bleeding.
please speak to your gyn as they are the
ones who will be able to investigate your
issues for you.
I could suppose quite a few reasons but
self diagonsis is a bad idea when it comes
to your reproductive system.

Yes, 5 more days to go, then waiting...
and my understanding is that will not let
me know if I am ovulating or not... just
about some other possible problems..

I was thinking the same thing. I thought
I remembered the drug to induce bleeding
was called something different.

You Are, Right, I Stand Corrected, But...doctors Not Helping

lol... yes I stand corrected, it is my
GYN. I always get them mixed up, for some
reason.
And I agree, first step is to talk to my
doctor, but I'm not getting any answers
from him! I have Kaiser- which can tell
you a lot. When he first told me it was a
problem all these years (and I was upset
no-one told me) I started crying. He gave
me a generic sheet which told me not
menstrating could cause (among other
things) overgrowth and cancer, and left.
I called the advice nurse with questions,
she wouldn't answer any. She left him a
message, he emailed me back generic
information on birth control pills.
Arggghhh! So, that is why I am posting
here- hoping people who have gone through
this might give me some ideas/knowledge,
as I am NOT getting information from my
doctor. I did have a doctor I liked at
kaiser (who never told me it wasn't
normal, by the way) but she left the
facility for one over an hour away.
Yes, the medication is... darn, I don't
have it with me. but I believe it is
progesterone based. I am supposed to take
it for 10 days, and it is 'supposed' to
make me bleed 7-10 days later.

Is it provera or something along those
lines that induces bleeding? I have taken
it before (3 years ago) and can't for the
life of me remember what it is called.

Hmmm.... very good to know. Found out
what the name of the medication it was he
prescribed... it is Prometrium.
At least from what I was able to look up,
it is progesterone based. So now I am
confused/concerned as to why he prescrbed
it to me. I wish I had a PPO, I could go
to another doctor!
Thank you for the information!

Prometrium is just progesterone. It will
not start bleeding. You need to be put on
provera to start your bleeding.
