Scared... Amenorrhea... Help Please (cross-posted) Posted: 05-15-07 10:50am
For years i've mentioned to the ob when
i'd go in that I hadn't had a period in
years, they'd ask why, i'd say I didn't
know, I thought it might be the birth
control pills, and they would say
nothing.
i was on ortho-novum 35 for about 16 years
then microgestin the last 2.
no period in years, at least 7.
thought the doctors would tell me it was a
problem, so I didn't worry about it.
And i've read various things on the
internet that birth control pills can
cause amenorrhea, plus the bc hand outs ay
period can skip, another reason why I
didn't worry about it.
One Dr. Last year had me take a blood
test, she said if it came out fine it was
probably the pill.
I even told my new ob about it, after
being off the pill for 9 weeks and still
no period. He just told me last week that
it's not normal, should have been getting
some periods, at least light ones.
So now they gave me progesterone to try to
induce bleeding.
2x since I stopped my pills my breasts got
sore, and I had cramps. No bleeding.
So... I need to know
#1 can amenorrhea happen or not from
prolonged use (18 years) on the birth
control pills I was on? Stopped getting
periods after around 9-11 years.
*2 is it true that women sometimes have
amenorrhea coming off of the pill?
#3 did my soreness and cramps mean
anything?
#4 I had a painful simple cyst (5cm
diameter) they did an ultrasound for a
while ago. No mention of anything else
going on in my ovaries, though now I don't
trust them to have said anything. Would
this indicate other fertility problems?
#3 what does this mean? I am terrified
this might mean I am infertile. Sad

I just wanted to let you know that the
term amennorrhea simply means that you
don't get your period. When something says
that it will cause amennorrhea, it doesn't
mean you have some horrible disease, it
just means that you aren't getting your
period. And yes, this is common. Being on
or coming off of birth control can cause
this.
The soreness and cramping could definitely
be due to the progesterone.
I wouldn't worry that you are infertile,
but I would definitely talk to your doc
and demand some answers!! I don't know how
the cyst would factor in to all this. Next
time you see you r doc, you need to ask
all of these questions.

Go and get a glucose tolorence test,
insulin test, and an ultrasound. The most
common reason for this is Pollycistic
Overiam Syindrome, and most doctors don't
think about it.
Maybe read up about it to, I have ended up
knowing more on this condition which I and
many many other woman suffer from, then
most doctors, and yes it does afect your
fertility, but the good news is there is
treatment.
