I have been on depo for about 3 years. I love this form of birth control because it is easy, cheaper and I don't have to deal with periods and the cramping that comes with them. I have gained a bit of weights since i have been on it and osteoporosis runs in my family. I want to get off it, but was wondering how long the weight gain will continue? Do all progestrin (spelling Sad ) only pills also cause weight gain?
I know there has been quite a lot of research on the osteoporosis effect and have read a few journal articles, but how serious is it? I am wrestling with deciding whether to switch or stay on it.
thanks

I never recommend Depo to anyone. Since getting off Depo, I have avoided hormonal birth control completely. I was one of the few people who did not gain any weight on Depo, although some of my hair did fall out when I started it and never grew back.

I don't know just how many women on Depo end up with irreversible bone loss. I do know that just within the past couple of years, the FDA said they do not recommend that women, especially young women, take Depo for more than two years unless they can't use other methods of birth control though, and that's enough for me to not use it again or recommend it.
