An abortion is the removal or expulsion of
an embryo or fetus from the uterus,
resulting in or caused by its death. An
aborition can occur spontaneously, as
during a miscarriage, or can be
artificially induced by chemical, surgical
or other means. More than 90% of abortions
are performed in the first trimester - up
through the 12th week or pregnancy. The
surgical procedure used during induced
abortion is called "suction aspiration"
and is 7-10 times safer than childbirth.
Suction aspiration takes less than 5
minutes to complete. A first trimester
abortion is medically quite simple and
carries low risk of complication. Cytotec,
or misoprostole, is a medication that is
taken orally that helps soften and dilate
the cervix so that the pregnancy can be
removed. Cyotec is used alone or in
conjunction with Laminaria for second
trimester abortions. The medications can
take one half to 4 hours to produce the
desired dilatation.The patient generally
stays in the office after taken the
Cytotec as she may experience chills or a
sensation of abdominal pressure and
cramping. You can consult an obstetritian
for more information and to schedule a
consultation.
