Pulling Out Method And Birth Control
Posted: 05-21-07 16:28pm

ok so i've just started birth control this month and i always tend to forget to take it at the right time so im usually always a few hours off. Well. me and my boyfriend used the pulling out method today for the first time and im extremely scared that i might be pregnant now. i even took a shower right after and like cleaned my self out. what do you think i should do? do you think i could really be pregnant?

It's possible. The pull out method is not a reliable form of birth control. Neither is taking a shower. Also, even with perfect use, the pill is not 100% effective, so pregnancy is always a possibility every time you have sex.

If you tend to be late with your pills a lot, then you should look into a backup method such as condoms or spermicide, or set an alarm to remind you to take your pill at the same time.

However, I would not panic about today unless you have been taking your pills more than six hours late or if you have been forgetting some days altogether. Just be careful in the future.

Have you thought about getting on a type of birth control that you don't ahve to take every day, like the patch or the ring? They are wonderful, and you only have to deal with them once a week or once a month.

The pull out method is not effective because pre-cum can have sperm in it, but it sounds like you already know that. Showering doesn't help because once sperm gets through your cervix it won't run out. It is helpful to keep condoms around for when you are off with your pills. If you are ever concerned that you haven't taken your pills well, just use condoms for a week.

I would suggest telling your doc that you have a hard time remembering to take the pill at the same time, and get her to switch you to something easier to remember. There are easier options!!
