Support For Losing Weight

I don't know where the original post wandered off to, can't remember what thread it was in. But I just thought I would check in with y'all to see how you are doing. Are you still thinking about it, or have you exercised yet?

I will tell ya how I lost my baby weight:

(first one doesn't count because I got sick and lost about 85 pounds)

With Hannah, I started back at Yoga class 2 weeks after my c section, but I took it easy at first. Normally I should weigh about 110 pounds, and when I delivered I weighed 168 (yuk). So about 3 weeks after she was born I started running again. Again, I started slowly at first with some good motivating tunes on my MP3 player. After a couple of weeks I was back to 2-3 miles a day. I breastfed only for the first 7 months, then started introducing solids. I think that helped a lot! When I went back to work I tried running in the morning, but I just didn't have enough time. I tried running after work, but still it didn't work very well with the schedules. Now I run during lunch instead of sitting down and eating for an hour. I usually eat half of my lunch before I go, and the other half after I get back. I am still doing yoga 3-4 times a week to tone my flabby midsection.

Diet: I am a vegetarian, and I have Celiac disease, so I can't eat wheat rye oats or barley. I rarely eat out for obvious reasons, and I can't eat fast food because it's usually contaminated with wheat. I started eating vegetarian for the sake of the animals, but found that it is a great way to lose weight, too. I do eat fish about 3 times a week and I still eat dairy (maybe too much) and eggs, etc.

What works for you guys? Who is going out to walk/run/ride/skate/move, etc at lunch time today?? Let's do it!

Excercise really is my problem. I really don't eat very much. But I'm not suppose to do anything physical at all. How crappy is that, as soon as I want to do something I'm not allowed. Confused I guess thats life.

You should be carefull. When you are young your body shouldn't really be deprived of any one food group. (like atkins) It may make you sick. While meat alone is fine, if you start feeling ill, you should put a little back into your diet. Not everyone's body can handle it.

I totally agree! We need all of the food groups! Atkins ( I think) is the low or no carb diet which I think is dangerous beccause carbs are the basic building blocks for our bodies. Vegetarian diet doesn't mean giving up any food groups, just different sources. And if you still eat fish and dairy then you are still getting animal sources of protein as well.

THat's kinda what I was getting at. Is that the difference between vegetarian and vegan?

Yes. Vegans eat no animal derived foods. There are non-animal sources of protein, but the diet is hard for many to follow, and you really have to watch carefully. It's not impossible, but I love cheese, so its not for me.

Lacto vegetarians eat no animal products aside from dairy.

Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians eat dairy and eggs

Moderate vegetarians ( I guess they finally found a label for me-Yea!) eat eggs, diary and fish.

I guess my advice to anyone who is thinking about this is start slowly. Modify one dinner a week to a vegetarian version. then try two nights a week. If you are happy with the results, then keep going. Don't deny yourself the things you want to eat, because then you will hate your new "diet" and what you are really aiming for is a lifestyle change. There are a lot of fabulous vegetarian products out there that are just about identical to the real thing (unfortuneately most are made with wheat gluten, so I can't eat them. I just make my own stuff most of the time). I would encourage anyone to give some of them a try. It's good for your health, can lower your cholesterol, it's good for the planet, and a lot of the time it's less expensive!
