Acid Reflux or espophogial cancer ?
Posted: 05-23-07 20:42pm

I have a few questions I'm hoping people around here will be able to answer:

First off, I'm a 23 year old male. I have been going through a decent amount of stress lately (lost my job and house). Incidently, I am moving to a different state at the end of the month, so getting government assistance here for going to a doctor may not be efficient. Recently my stomach and chest started hurting and my throat felt "weird". I couldn't really describe it. I was scared I was having a heart attack, but one of my roommates who has had a heart attack said no. I took some free Zantac samples and they seemed to help. For the most part my stomach has let up in the last few days, but now m throat feels like it does after you've been breathing into a scarf in cold weather. In total this has been going on for about a week and the roommate tells me it is probably acid reflux. It mainly effects at night, but sometimes my throat hurts on and off throughout the day.

My questions are as follows:
1.) Should Acid Reflux go on so long?

2.) Drinking water doesn't always help my throat... though warm water does work for just a few minutes. Is this normal?

3.) What are the symptomatic differences between acid reflux and esophogial cancer? (I may be being paranoid here.)

4.) Is it possible it's all stress related?

Thanks,
Lincthra

To answer your questions:

1.) Yes it could. Alcohol, smoking, and stress can make it worse.

2.) Hey whatever works for ya - when I have acid reflux, water actually makes mine worse and doesn't do a thing for the soreness in my throat. I typically take antacids and avoid drinking much of anything until it goes away

3.) Go to the doctor. If you've never been treated for acid reflux before and since you're young than I don't think you have anything to worry about regarding cancer. However it would still be a good idea to get it checked out by a doctor so you can start feeling better.

4.) Stress has been shown to increase stomach acid production

I'm a 23 yr old college student and I noticed that the week before, week after, and the week of final exams I get acid reflux really bad! But typically if I don't have much stress going on than I won't have it so I know mine is related to stress. Also around that time I don't have time to cook or eat right or even get enough sleep so I know all of that plays a role when I get it. Anyways hope you get to feeling better!!

Im 15, i have severe angsity attacks and acid reflux shortly followed. I remember the doctors telling me, its all stressed related, if i learned how to cool it, by doing yoga or learning how to just catch my breath id be fine. But the feeling i get when experiancing my acid reflux is either naushea or huge stomach aches. Sometimes i even have heartburn, or my throat will be burned by the up coming of the acid. For acid reflux, i eat less acidic foods, stay away from apples/apple juice, pop..cant think of anything else off the top of my head but it really helps if you try and stick to a healthier diet, with less acid in the foods you eat and things you drink. hopefully that helped.
