19 With Prostate Problems .. Please Help Posted: 05-24-07 14:45pm
Please read my whole story and tell me
what you think.
I'm 19 years old and I live in Canada. I
am circumcised and I have never had
intercourse because I developed
prostatitis almost 2 years ago. I have
been suffering clinical depression for
over 4 years, but these health issues made
me so depressed I used to hurt myself
physically. I'm okay now and I've been
feeling a lot better, getting excercise
and working a steady job, but I still have
these problems. I was in a car accident
about four years ago and got whiplash,
which only made things worse.
When it all started 2 years ago.. I
suddenly had red blotches all over my
scrotum. It didn't go away after a week
and I went to the doctor. He gave me
cream for jock itch and the blotches went
away. After this I started having
erection problems. It slowly got worse
until I was having trouble peeing, pain
when ejaculating, pain in my testicles,
mild hemerhoids, abdominal pain, and
decreased sensitivity of my penis. I went
to my doctor several times, he had me
screened for STDs.. urine tests and a
semen culture.. everything came back
negative. He diagnosed me with
prostatitis and put me on antibiotics.
This was the beginning of the worst
depression of my life. I was smoking weed
daily, binge drinking, taking aspirin and
ibuprofen in triple dose. I had to dump
my girlfriend who I really wanted to get
serious with. I wasn't working.. I didn't
want to hang out with friends. I was so
stressed that I couldn't leave the house,
my skin broke out terribly, and I dropped
out of college because I was so anxious I
could barely keep my head up. I was
living in my parents basement and I knew I
was a total utter loser.
When the pills didn't help, my doctor sent
me to a urologist, who said the same thing
and put me on some more pills. The pills
did nothing, and I went to another
urologist who again said the same thing.
I eventually started going to a holistic
doctor who helped me learn to relax and to
eat right. About this time I ended up in
the ER with an ulcer.. I passed out and
puked blood all over myself.. I was in the
hospital for a week on a liquid diet. Now
my doctors are telling me to learn to live
with prostatitis. Well I'm doing it 19
years old and I can't have sex because its
uncomfortable and all I want is to have a
normal healthy sex life.. I have no
confidence because of this.
I've made a lot of improvements in the
past six months. I now live on my own,
I'm working full time. I am eating
healthy and getting plenty of excercise.
I don't binge drink, and I'm not taking
any drugs (recreational or prescription).
I've quit smoking for over a month now.
I'm ready to get to the bottom of these
problems.. and I need your help. Please
if you have any suggestions for me.. or if
you can relate to my story at all please
reply. Anything you can say is
comforting.

i don't have any advise as I am not
familar with this condition, but I can
give you my support and say congrats! I
just wanted to comment that it seems
you've turned your life around and have
gotten control of it. Getting off the
booze and weed should improve your overall
health. Way to go.
Exactly what is the problem that you can't
have sex?

First of all, let me start off by saying I
understand where you're coming from, and
believe it or not, you're not the only one
going through this. My experience was
quite similar, although not nearly as
severe as yours. When I turned 20, I
started having similar pains, which I
attributed to a bladder infection, but
when the pain continued after I finished
taking the "pills," I knew there was
something else wrong. I too experienced
the "jock itch" as well as other similar
symptoms. I thought there was something
wrong with my stomach and my urinary
tract, and my doctor diagnosed me with
everything from IBS to ulcers. I had so
many strange symptoms that my doctor did
not know where to start, so he asked me
which symptom bothered me the most, and I
told him that my urinary tract bothered me
the most, so he sent me to a urologist.
My urologist, who was familiar with the
problem and the symptoms, immediately
diagnosed me with prostatitis. After
several tests and prescribing me several
different "pills" (similar to your
situation), my doctor determined that it
was chronic prostatitis and I would have
to learn to live with it.
Let me share a few things I've learned
from living with this for the last 5
years. First of all, understanding the
symptoms is the key to living with it.
I experienced what I would look back now
and call a mild depression for several
months, but 90% of that stress was brought
about by me. With all these strange
symptoms all going on at once, I convinced
myself that I had everything from STDs,
HIV, to cancer. I couldn't explain what
was happening, and so I worried myself to
death. Although sexually I never
experienced any major problems (minus the
painful ejaculation, I was still sexually
active), I did worry about whether it
would get worse or whether I would
continue to be able to have sex, and as a
result, my sex drive decreased out of
paranoia. As time progressed, I started
understanding why particular things
happened, how my diet affected it, and I
started noticing trends and patterns. As
I understood more, the less it affected
me.
The next thing I will tell you is that you
have to be patient. I cannot promise that
you it will get better, but from personal
experience it eventually gets better. As
I adjusted my diet, my pain started
decreasing, and eventually I was able to
drink again, as well as periodically
smoke. Each case is different, but for
the time being, I advise letting all that
go.
The last piece of advice I can give you is
to seek information, advice, and support
from anywhere you can. I understand that
its not that common (hence the lack of
knowledge) and most people cannot relate
to what you are going through. However,
there are online forums which discuss
these issues. There used to be a forum
just for prostititis that I went to (its
been a while so I dont know if it still
exists) but it was good to be able to
communicate with people whose experiences
are similar and who could provide me with
advice. It's very therapeutic. I was
just browsing the site, but after reading
your post, I decided to sign up and
respond because I would have loved to know
that I wasn't the only one going through
this when I first got diagnosed.
