Liver Cirrhosis : how to classify level of damage to liver ? Posted: 05-27-07 07:44am
Hi Doc,
can You tell me if there is a possibility
to have ascites due to cirrhosis and at
the same time normal enzymes level.
My dad got this result recently and I
don't know the level of damage in his
liver.

Ascites is a term used to describe fluid
retention in the abdominal cavity; it' s
the most common complication of liver
cirrhosis .The lab findings for a
cirrhosis diagnosis include, among others,
aminotransferases levels that are usually
moderately elevated (AST levels higher
than ALT levels). Normal ALT and AST
levels do not normally preclude cirrhosis.
The severity of cirrhosis of the liver is
classified using the levels of the
bilirubin, albumin, INR, as well as the
presence and severity of ascites and
encephalopathy (brain damage).
