Sinus Trouble Due to Allergies ?? Posted: 05-27-07 20:45pm
I have been experiencing some scary
symptoms for several weeks now. I've seen
two different doctors, the first one twice
a week apart. The first gave me Ativan for
managing anxiety, which I've used up. The
second has gone along with that original
diagnosis and also said that my symptoms
could be from allergies, recommending
Claritin in the morning and Zantac and
Benadryl at night to deal with my sleeping
disturbances. In addition, if these didn't
work, he gave me Lexapro to deal with
anxiety.
On to the symptoms:
It all started with a feeling of
dizziness, almost lightheadedness. It
wasn't the kind of dizziness that would
make me fall; it was maybe more like
disorientation.
Anyway, it has progressed. This original
symptoms continued when I tried to sleep.
When I laid down, it felt like I was
falling backwards. I would have a hard
time falling asleep and then would wake up
several times in the night, sometimes
panicked. Also, sometimes as I was falling
asleep, I would jerk and wake myself up; I
would also be scared because this seemed
like something that shouldn't happen. It
would take me a long time to get back to
sleep when I woke up in the middle of the
night.
New symptoms include feeling drowsy during
the day, like the feeling one gets when
just waking up except for a long time.
This was sometimes accompanied by some big
amounts of yawning. Also, this drowsiness
combined with/caused a kind of brain fog,
a feeling of detachment from everything
around me that made it hard to focus. I
would also describe this as feeling kind
of dazed; there's very little cognitive
loss. I can still do pretty much
everything I ever did, and I took my
college finals while feeling like this and
got a 3.7 GPA for the semester.
Sometimes it feels like there's pressure
in my sinuses, sometimes in the top of my
head; sometimes the pressure is on the
left or right side of my head, sort of a
headache.
Could this be allergies? What can I do to
fix it? As I said, the doctor thinks it's
allergies combined with anxiety, but the
Claritin doesn't seem to be fixing the
physical symptoms. Now what?

I have been to so many doctors and allergy
speciaist, just kinda got lucky and
figured it all out (what works best for
meanyway. I gave up the Claritin and
started taking one benedryl in the
morning. I also use Zyrtec during the bad
spring months and fall months,.....have
not had to use this at this time. I keep
Nasonex in the bathroom and every morning
I spray one squirt up each nostril. I
noticed a world of difference! The Zyrtec
is so expensive nd I findi can get alone
with out it.... I also found snorting salt
water with a pinch of soda keeps my
sinuses clean and keeps the pressure
headaches away! Hope this helps you!

Thanks for the suggestion. Being an
allergy sufferer yourself, do you think
these symptoms could be allergy related?
I would try branching out into different
allergy medications if I could be sure
this was allergies. However, I'm not sure
if my symptoms are consistent with
seasonal allergies, especially since I
have never felt like this before. All of
this started about 4 or 5 weeks ago, which
coincided with the start of the spring
allergy season, but still I worry that
there is some underlying neurological
problem. So could allergies explain all
this? Should I look into Nasonex?

Never been on Ativan, but on Effexor 37.5
for hte last 8 years! The Claritin made
medizzy and I also had trouble sleeping at
night. I take 5 mg of ambien for this. As
for your question, I do believe allergies
have a lot to do wiht sinus pressure and
the brain fog could be caused by this an a
mixture of the meds. Very proud of you for
the 3.7 on this semesters GPA. Keep it up!

I have some pain behind my eyes... and a
headache that feels more like pressure in
my head. Allergies? I'm just looking for
some testimonials here about the symptoms
of seasonal allergies, especially
sinus-related.

My wife suffered from sinusitis and
allergies throughout her lifetime. Even
after a corrective surgery was performed
to possibly decrease her incidents, they
became worse. She was introduced to OPC-3
and her symptoms have faded drastically!
Her breathing is better and she doesn't
have nearly as many infections as she once
had. If you'd like more information, feel

Sorry for the late response. The doctor
just put me on a course of antibiotics for
a possible sinus infection, I'm on day 4
of that and there isn't a lot of
improvement. So yes, tell me of OPC-3!
