Are these symptoms of MS even with a clear MRI ?
Posted: 05-30-07 20:48pm

I am curious if my sympoms sound like MS or if it could be that even though my MRI was clear a year ago? If not what other issues could be related to this? Does my b12 level seem abnormal and if so what could it be related to for someone my age and with my diet?

I have had this for two years now with it getting worse over time. Some months or weeks it doesn't seem that bad, but it always comes back. I have recently had a lot more tingling in my arms and legs and the back of my neck. My muscles have also been twitching, but it is starting to be on both sides. I am very fatigued, but never fill satisfied by sleep. I have trouble with small motions (such as writing), but continue to be active.

Current medical treatment: Two years ago I went to a regular physician, then a physical therapist, and a chiropractor. I then went to a neurologist who cleared me after two MRI's and was sent to a sports physician who tried effexor, shots in my tension points, and lidocain patches. I moved at this point to NY (from OH) and gave up frustrated, trying to put it in the back of my mind. Then after a year I couldn't take it and went to a new doctor who was a gp and sports doctor. He tried physical therapy but it made everything much worse and my pt said that my muscles were not firing very well in my back. Then after blood work revealed a higher CK level and low b12 (150) I was sent to a rhemotologist. He checked my blood work after a restful weekend revealing my CK was fine but my b12 was still low (201). I eat a balanced diet and am only 22 so he sent me to a hemotologist who tested my blood work clearing my of a b12 deficiency. At the hemotologist he noticed! neuropathy so he is sending me back to a neurologist."

Possible neuropathy is exposed via a physical neurological examination (motility, muscle tone, reflexes…) and electro-myo-graphy (EMG). Many diseases can cause neuropathy including multiple sclerosis (MS) and deficit of Vitamin B12... but in both cases, organic lesions are present in the brain and spinal cord that can be seen on an MRI. A Vitamin B12 deficit also causes megaloblastic anemia, in addition to neuropathy. MS is a severe neurological disease that always shows lesions in the brain on MRI. You SHOULD see a neurologist for physical examination, and then you can request an EMG and MRI, if necessary.
