Had Ablation , Now Scheduled For Hysterectomy Posted: 06-02-07 00:56am
Hi everyone,
I had endo ablation 3 years ago for long,
heavy, abnormal periods. It slowed down
my periods, which has been great, but now
it's starting all over again. I have
suffered with this since my early twenties
to different extents, sometimes worse than
others. My obgyn suggested I have a
hyst-total!. I am scheduled for surgery
in two weeks and am getting very nervous.
I don't want to gain weight, have sexual
problems, hormone problems, depression or
any of the other things on the long lists
I have read on here. I have decided not
let her take my ovaries, it's absolutely
unnecessary and seems to have a lot of
side affects. I would love to hear from
women who have experienced the same issues
and decisions. Is a hyst going too far?
I would love to have permanent relief and
move on!!
Thank you Sisters

Discuss things with her before your
surgury.
removal of the ovaries is not part of a
hysterectomy (total or otherwise).
removal of the ovaries is an oophrectomy.
discuss your options of keeping the
ovaries (rarely removed these days unless
you are at high risk of ovarian cancer)
due to the fact that they continue to
produce hormones which help prevent
conditions such as osteoporosis.
also ask about subtotal meaning that your
cervix is not removed either.
A hyst is major surgury and there is no
going back. I would advise any woman (I am
not a medical professional) to at least
consider other possible options before a
hyst.
as you have already had an ablation which
hasn't resolved your issues then a hyst
maybe the answer for you.
The worst thing you can do is go in to
this un-informed.
make a list of questions and book an appt
with your doctor/surgeon before the
procedure and make sure you get answers
that you understand.
If they explain something and you don't
get it - tell them - don't just nod and
say OK.
Unfortunately we really only see the bad
sides of hysts because people only make a
noise about it when things go wrong.
the 1000's of women who have hysts every
year and they go well, never say anything
because they just move on with their life
and forget it ever happened.
for every person who has problems post
hyst 1000's do not.
find out if your hyst will be abdominal
surgury or if it will be performed
vaginally.
abdominal hysts require at least 12 weeks
of careful recovery to set a good base for
healing.

hiya.. i had an ablation 3 yrs ago now and
i must admit i wish i took the other
option and had a total hysterectomy, but
with things as they were at home with 3
small children under 5 i didnt think i
could cope with the recovery as i didnt
have much in the way of support. 3yrs on
well im on me period now and its heavy i
was lead to believe that bleeding would
cease after the ablation and yes it did
get easier for a while but now im back to
having periods as usual and clots...so im
thinking i will have to go down the other
route some day as its in the family of
having to have early hysterectomys and ive
already had cancer there 10 yrs ago, so i
would say do what your heart tells you, i
personally am one of those women that are
happy to have the lot taken away after
youve had all the children you want if
there is a problem, wouldnt make me feel
any less a woman...hope you feel better
soon.xx

Had Ablation, Now Scheduled For Hysterectomy Posted: 08-04-07 09:44am
Hi,
I wanted to say that I suffered problems
with the extreme bleeding for over five
years. In December I had an ablation. My
post results from tissue samples showed
abnormal cells so I had a hysterectomy and
removal of ovaries just recently. I am
still having trouble bleeding and I'm
trying to find out why. It's not an
enormous amount now but I'm just worried.
I've been in and they seem to think I'm ok
but we'll see.
I want to believe them but after years of
abnormalcy I guess I'm worried. I thought
I'd be through with all this now.
I am much older than you and was
considered pre-menopausal so I'm probably
not the one to ask about going through
hysterectomy so young.
Do you have children? Do you want
children?
Maybe some others can help.
