Ankle Replacement In Canada ? Posted: 06-02-07 12:42pm
I am a 37 year old woman who had a
traumatic injury at age 11 with complete
fracture of all bones in the ankle. I had
hardware put in and removed a year or so
later. I have had trouble over the last
couple of years with increasing pain and
locking of the joint. Last month I had
bone chips removed and my surgeon informed
me that I have severe arthritis in one
joint and moderate in all the other
joints. He is suggesting that I may need
ankle replacement or fusion soon. The
information available is not plentiful and
I wonder if anyone in Canada has had an
ankle replacement, and if so, how long did
you wait, who did it and was it
successful. I would be interested in
hearing from anyone who has had this done
regardless of where you are from and what
your experience was. Would you recommend
it? Thanks to anyone who can provide some
information.

Hi,
I am not so sure about Canada but I can
tell you my experience in the US. I have
end-stage arthritis in rt. ankle due to
traumatic break 6 years ago. I can barely
walk and finally went to surgeon at
Rothman Institute in Phila. evidently, I
am not a candidate for replacement. My
surgeon's criteria is over 65 y.o. and
under 200 lbs. and with consideration to
how much damage is done. If too much
damage they fear the result will not be
positive as from what I have read the more
mobility before replacement the more
positive the outcome. I am 50 y.o. and he
told me that the average life of a
replacement is 110 years. Their
experience with follow up replacements is
limited or none. Good luck with your
search!

Hi...
I am 32 and recently had the OATS to my R
ankle. Doctor said I would need a
replacement within 5-10 years. As for who
would do replacement in Canada...I'm not
sure.
Hope you find what you're looking for
...and I wish you luck~Amy~

Oops! My mistake. I meant to say that I
was told an average ankle replacement
lasts about 10 years - not 110!
