Distal radius and ulna fracture Posted: 06-03-07 09:59am
My 7 yr old had a transverse fracture
through the distal third of the left radus
and ulna. 20 degree dorsal angulation. He
had a closed reduction and at 4 wks showed
slight angulation. He is now 7 weeks post
fracture and complains of wrist pain. His
wrist looks a little different compared to
his other arm. The fracture was not real
close to his wrist but inbetween his wrist
and mid forearm. He also used his
shoulder now to rotate his arm instead of
his elbow. Is this all common after such
a fracture? He is a child who hardly ever
complains. Any info would be greatly
appreciated.
The most common complication of distal
radius and ulna fractures is finger and
shoulder stiffness. Therefore,active
motion of the fingers, elbow and shoulders
should be practiced. Cast immobilization
is usually maintained for 3-8 weeks,
depending upon fracture stability. Your
son can expect the pain to gradually
diminish and wrist weakness to remain for
6 to 12 months after the surgery.
