So I just found out I have hypoglycemia
and I have a few questions. Just knowing
that I have to eat protein every few hours
has helped a ton, and now I don't feal bad
about having to eat NOW.
1. Does it get better or worse as you get
older? I think for me it has gotten worse
over the last few years since I entered
college. I just hope that now that I know
how to manage it, it will stabilize.
2. Adding protein to my breakfast is the
hardest because I don't like breakfast
meats or egg. I tried Ensure and I think
it helps but its some sugary so that can't
be good, not to mention its expensive.
Are there any good powder mixes with all
the stuff in ensure minus the sugar?
3. Who needs to know that I have
hypoglycemia? Obviously my doctor knows
since I got the test ordered through her.
I've never been bad enough to pass out or
go to the hospital, just the normal can't
focus, feeling awful, and a bit shaky.
ok, thanks for helping me out.

1. It will only get worse if you don't
treat it. Most people start to get
symptoms around the ages of 18-23, which
is where you fit in there. I got mine
around 23.
2. Eggs are the best source of protein for
a hypoglycemic, and the best protein
source in the world. They contain
absolutely everything except vitamin c, so
you may want to try them some more, but
it's up to you. Ensure is absolutely out
of the question, you must constantly read
labels and watch for any kind of sugar or
artificial sweetener, including natural
ones like stevia. What are you trying to
get out of Ensure? Just protein? If so
you can try an unflavored protein powder
if you can find some, that will do it just
fine. Otherwise, if you're looking for
vitamins just get a good vitamin from a
health food store, but no garbage like
Centrum.
3. I would let anyone know that you think
needs to know. Let's say you work for a
phone telethon company, you'd probably
want to let your boss know that you may
need to take breaks or have shorter work
periods. Since you're in college, you
might want to let your professors know of
your problem in case anything would
happen, and to also explain why you may
need to eat during class if they care
about that. Go by that and you can tell
anyone you want.

1. Yep, I'm 21 so thats about right. The
wierd thing is I never ate a lot of sugar
growing up, a lot less than most american
kids.
2. How do I know if a protein powder is
good or not. Looking at all the options
in the store I get so confused. Are there
any that have the vitamins like ensure.
I'm not a fan of vitamins because I don't
want my vitamins to come in a pill.
Also is some sugar ok occasionally. I
don't eat many sweets, and I find a lot
candy and other store bought sweets causes
problems, but I can usually handle
homemade desserts, cookies, cakes, and ice
cream. Should the strictness of my diet
be based on how I feel, or do I need to be
more careful to prevent future problems.
My diet is already pretty healthy; I don't
drink pop, coffee, or alcohol. I eat
wheat bread and healthy cereal like rice
crispies or chex cereal. I only
occasionally have sweet stuff.

If a protein powder has anything other
than whey/egg/soy in it and lecithin to
keep it consistent, it's not good for you.
There is only one brand I know of that is
like this. There are some that have
plenty of vitamins, but unfortunately they
have plenty of other things you can't
have. What's wrong with a vitamin? There
isn't much else you can do for that. No
sugar is okay. It makes no sense that
you'd be able to handle 'homemade' foods,
because they're just as bad if not worse
than candy. Your diet should be strict
for at least 4-6 months so your body
achieves a healthy stasis. Then, you can
slowly, very slowly, add things back in to
see what you can tolerate. Don't be
surprised if cake is not on that list.
Make sure all bread you eat is 100% whole
grain, otherwise you're going to get sick
from it. Rice crispies is not healthy,
you might as well say screw it and eat
Lucky Charms. Neither is Chex.
