HIV transmission via oral contact with blood
Posted: 06-06-07 05:45am

Hi Doc, this issue has been making me very anxious. A week ago i had sucked some blood out of my friend's finger which was injured, and had it spat out on the sink. I rinsed my mouth thoroughly. My concern is whether I could have gotten HIV from that. I have a small blister with no blood in my inner lip. HIV test 3 days later came back negative; I realised that there is a 3 month window period. This issue has been driving me nuts since it happened, and I might very well go insane in 3 months.. My friend is a 20 yr old bi-sexual female with one girlfriend. I am very very afraid as I am an international student doing my degree overseas....I am very very very very afraid that i can't smile nor eat or sleep well anymore...

Can you please help ?

One of the ways of getting AIDS is via contact with HIV-infected blood, semen or vaginal secretions into open wound or sores. If there hasn't been any lesions of the skin or lips, and if the lip has remained intact, then there is no real possibility of getting the virus into the blood stream, and therefore getting the infection. The HIV test detects the presence of antibodies to HIV in the blood. After the original infection it takes 2 weeks to six months of HIV antibodies to appear in the blood. Testing is done at 3 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after exposure to the virus to determine if the person has been infected, or not.
