Q: Heavy discharge during pregnancy : will it hurt the baby ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 7th, 2007
I am 34 weeks pregnant and was treated for chlymidia at 20 weeks after having a full sexual health check through swabs. I took a course of antibiotics over 7 days and was swabbed again, the test results came back clear. The problem is i still have quite a heavy discharge, it isnt just as heavy as i was when i had the infection and doesnt smell anymore either but i have to wear a light sanitary towel. Ive had this discharge for many years now and i find it very annoying! As im due to give birth soon, its a constant worry on my mind as i wudnt like anything to happen to my baby. What do u think? Thankyou

Pregnancy Answer A2902
At this point, it seems that the most important action to take is to cure the Chlamydia infection. According to your text, you have completed this successfully. The present discharge could be due to another infection or to the pregnancy itself. Another infection can be confirmed or excluded by a vaginal examination and microbiological smear. A Pap-test can be also done. Any vaginal infection (colpitis) during pregnancy should be taken very seriously because of the possible implications (miscarriage or premature birth) for the pregnancy. You can contact your gynecologist for an examination and further expert advice.
