Severe Nausea Is Ruining My Life , Please Help Posted: 06-08-07 22:49pm
Am I physically sick or mentally sick?
Could severe stress and anxiety cause
these symtoms because I am so terribly
worried.
I have been continuously nauseas now for
nearly five weeks, I can barely eat (at
the mement I can barely nibble on toast)
and am struggling to keep hydrated ... I
have lost about 6 kg.
I'm a 52-year-old mum and I have young
children to care for and I can barely
manage any more - the nausea is so
persistent.
For many years I have had recurrent bouts
of gastritis but about three months ago I
woke with a bout of severe stomach spasms
which made me vomit and lasted an hour, I
then had about five days of nausea, three
weeks later the same thing happened. I
have had four bouts of the same, the last
one five weeks ago which has left me with
nausea ever since. I have been treated
with various anti-nausea medication,
including ondansetron which they give for
chemotherapy patients but they don't help.
I went to a different GP yesterday and
he's given me some different meds which
make me very tired.
I've had ultrasounds, blood tests and a CT
scan of my abdomen - all normal. I am
waiting for a gastroscopy and colonoscopy
but don't know when they will be - a
gastroscopy two years ago showed some
inflamation
I have been under considerable stress for
the past few years as my husband had a
break-down, lost his business and now we
must sell our home and of course this has
put strain on our family life.
Please can someone advise me. Can
something this intense just be stress.

Anxiety can certainly cause what you are
experiencing, tripmum2, so failing
something showing up in the tests you've
had, it may well be the culprit,
especially as you have major stressors in
your life.
I'm curious about the ondesetron.
Bristol-Myers Squibb initially developed
this as an anti anxiety medication back in
the late 1980s, but then decided to focus
on its anti nausea properties as a counter
to what is the most common side effect of
chemo and radiation therapy. I'm assuming
that you only took it for a short time
because its too expensive to use as an
antidepressant (its a SSRI variant) and I
can't see the PBS paying for what is an
off-label use.
Gastro intestinal disorders such as
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) often co
occur with anxiety disorders. The vagus
nerve directly connects the gut to brain
regions involved in anxiety (and
depression). In fact vagus nerve
stimulators are now being successfully
used to treat depression that doesn't
respond to drugs or psychotherapy.
Best wishes, mate.

I am assuming that you are at the end of
your rope, the nausea you experienced in
the past as crippling. You were dreading
it returning and it did. Now you are
possible stuck in a loop, your dread of
the nausea causes you to become anxious,
which in turn causes the body to react,
sending the nerve stimulation through the
body, causing nausea. I am dealing with
something similiar, and am now on
clonanzapam until I can get to a
psychiatrist. I saw a psychologist
yesterday, and when I told her I was
taking .5 mg a day, she told me to go back
to my GP and get an increase, and to use
the meds as I needed. Today I took 1 mg
and all the symptoms subsided. Some minor
nausea but NOTHING as bad as it was.
Please get with a phychiatrist and see
what he thinks. It could be all in your
head and still VERY VERY REAL!
