I'm Worried About My Boyfriend ... what Are Schz Symptoms?
Posted: 06-11-07 19:32pm

Me and my boyfriend have been together for 3 months and I'm pretty worried about him. At first he had what everybody thought (and most people still seem to think) are night terrors. Only at night time when it was dark and he was alone in his room, he'd see the figure of a person crawling towards him on his floor and he couldn't move his whole body at all. It would last about 30 seconds and then go away. He'd come back to consciousness gasping and stuff for few seconds, and then he'll be o.k. But he gets depressed often, and these night terrors had effected he sleep. I'm going to start seeing a psychologist as soon as possible due to depression problems, and out of my concern for him I suggested that he come with me when I started going with him. He refused for awhile not really explaining why. Then last night he told me that at one point in his childhood his parents had taken him to one, and he sort of developed a fear for them because he said when the psychiatrist would ask him questions he would get bad feelings, like the psychiatrist was going to harm him in some way. When he told me about these feelings it made my concern grow even more. I should also add that his past has been extremely traumatic. He was molested as a child, which started around age 4 or 5 and went on for a few years until he moved here. Both of us are 16. But the feelings he described made me worried, and he also said that sometimes he'll know exactly what he's doing and whats' going on, and then a couple minutes later he'll forget what he had just done in those past 2 or 3 minutes. I don't know much about schizophrenia, and I must add that ever since I saw the movie "A Beautiful Mind" I've been pretty paranoid about it, lol. But what he's describing worried me and I honestly have no idea if it's schizophrenia or type of depression or anxiety or something. My mom seems to think it's a type of anxiety or paranoia, because he said his night terrors started happening shortly after he was molested. Then they stopped for awhile apparently, and once his uncle who he was very close to died they started up again. I just want some sort of advice on if this sounds like schizophrenia or not. My mother thinks I'm thinking too much into it but whether it's schz or not the feelings he's having shouldn't be taken lightly at all. Any information would be really appreciated .. thanks.

The episodes where he sees the figure crawling toward him and can't move are called "sleep paralysis". It's not schizophrenia nor a mental illness, and some people get it. It's harmless. You can check out the entry "sleep paralysis" on wikipedia

All that said, he might be getting some other symptoms not connected with sleep paralysis, like depression. Maybe he should check out a psychologist, not necessarily a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists just make you pop pills; a psychologist will actually talk to you more and analyse the situation better.

thank you very much :]].
That helps alot.
He's going to check out a psychologist
as soon as the case with his uncle is over.
His uncle is going to be forced to pay the amount it will take to get him help.
