What Do They Do When They Test You For Stds? Posted: 06-11-07 20:24pm
I was thinking about going in for some STD
tests just to be safe, and I was curious
what all they do to test you. I know
there's probably a pee-in-a-cup test, but
other than that, what will they do?

Assuming your a woman they don't do pee in
a cup tests for stds. They do swab tests
of your vagina and cervix to get cells and
fluid samples to test for the stds.
Basically feels like a pap smear.

They will also take blood (or send you to
a lab to get blood taken) for other tests
such as .H.I.V and hepatitis. If you
decide to get it done when you're in for
your regular pap smear, make sure to tell
them in advance that you want an std panel
done because that changes the type of swab
tests they will do.

I hear they scratch at your cervix to get
new cells..is this true? Does it hurt?
I'm not sexually active other than
non-intercorse things such as masturbation
or any problems so I've yet to need one,
but the rumor is a scary one that'd be
nice to have quashed if it could be.

I don't know exactly how they do things
when they test for STDs, but they scrape
cells off your cervix when you get a pap
smear, and that does not hurt. It's like
when you're in school and the teacher
gives you a Q-tip to wipe the inside of
your cheek to get cells to look at under a
microscope. That's the same technique the
ob-gyn uses. She wipes some of your cells
off with a Q-tip type thing so she can
look at them.

Actually, every woman is different when it
comes to cervical swabs. I can feel it
personally, and sometimes it feels a bit
like a cramp or a pinch, or just this
weird pressure inside of you. But other
women don't feel it.
