Telling the Grandparents
Posted: 06-13-07 11:40am

I am 17 and just found out i am pregnant. I took two home pregnancy test and they came out positive. My boyfriend and I are very excited, but very worried on how our parents will react. We plan on telling them at the same time after dinner on Saturday. Any tips on how to smooth it over. My boyfriend's sister was a teen mother, as well as his mother, so they are going to take it differently than most (probably saying 'haven't you learned by our mistake?'). I want them to be happy that they are grandparents, but i know that will take a little while. Any tips will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Shannon

Dear Shannon,
You are not alone. I am 16 going to be 17 soon and the father of my child who is less than 2 months old in my girlfriend. I went through having to tell my parents and her parents and everything went fine. My situation was much much more worse when telling our set of grandparents than yours and in the end everything was worked out. I know it's not easy but after the brief initial shock everything gets a lot better. If my girlfriend and I did it with the type of bad situation we were under you can too!

When it comes to telling parents here are some tips... Stay calm, make sure you have a plan to tell them about how you are going to get through school and raise a baby together, and also if someone suggests abortion or adoption don't feel pressured into doing anything you don't want to... If you want to keep your child that is great and no one can take that away from you. also congratulations!!!
