How Much Stuff Is Too Much ? Posted: 06-14-07 20:45pm
Just wondering if anyone has a rough idea
of what is needed initially with a
newborn. As you guys know I am the
babystuff hording previously non pregnant
lady ( who is now almost 7 weeks
preggers), so I am not sure when I should
stop buying stuff....specially new born.
ANyone have a good resource to use or have
a list they used or something. FOr example
how many sleepers and how many onezies
etc? What about receiving blankets and
burb pads...

i don't have a list but i think babies r
us might have one on their website.
here's what i learned... all babies are
different but my baby never fit into
newborn clothes or diapers (8lbs 5oz at
birth). they grow *very* fast so i would
recommend only buying like 8 sleepers and
onesies and 4 outfits. you can always buy
more later if you need them. when i packed
up my baby's 0-3 month clothing (at 6
weeks i think), he hadn't worn more than
half of it.

i'm currently 21-wk's pregnant, and my
boyfriend & i started purchasing baby
stuff fairly early on in the pregnancy.
i knew before getting pregnant that it
wasn't wise to buy a lot of newborn sized
clothing, because you do stand the chance
of giving birth to a bigger baby. newborn
sized clothing doesn't fit babies who
weigh more than 8 pounds.
so, as for newborn stuff, we only have one
package of white onesies & three
outfits. other than that, we have bought a
ton of 3 to 9 months sized clothing. when
i say "a ton," there is no exaggeration.
we went overboard,
but at least we know it'll fit her
eventually.

thanks ladies...all the newborn stuff I
have bought is up to 11 or 13 pounds.
Mostly I have bought 0-3mths and 3 -6
months. I think maybe in canada the sizes
are different. Anything under 8lbs is in
the preemie section, very few newborn
stuff is 8lbs.
What about receiving blankets and burppads
etc...I hear I need tones of blankets and
sleepers???

You'll get a lot of stuff at your shower,
provided you live in an area where showers
are given.
Sleepers 6-8
blankets 6-8
burp cloths 10 or more
5 outfits, they do grow fast.
10 onsies
socks
2 crib sheets or 2 of whatever you are
using
baby bath, baby lotion
diapers
alcohol wipes for the umbilical cord
stump
petroleum jelly if you have a boy and plan
to circumcize
baby wipes
thermometer
bottles (a couple even if you plan to
breastfeed)
Plan on doing more laundry than you could
ever imagine!!!

We do live in a place with showers etc,
but I dunno if anyone wll throw me one,
perhaps my family will...and from them Im
hoping for cash/toys r us Gift cert to get
our stroller! Yay.
Thanks again.

I guess .I'm speaking of more clothes
because .I live in .Maine and it gets cold
here. If .I lived in the south where it's
hot, I would say onsies of all colors end
of story.

I've only bought about two persific
outfits, the rest is just packs of
t-shirts, packs of trousers, bodysuits
etc. Newborns grow out of clothes so
quickly so it's not worth buying very much
plus for me becaue .Mika will be a summer
baby it makes sense for her to just be in
a coloured bodysuit with a sunhat and lots
of sunblock on!

im not trying to be mean but i just wanted
to say that is not *alway* true, my
daughter was born 8lbs 10 oz and she fits
into newborn, shes 9lbs 3 oz as of
yesterday and she still does...i even got
one primee outfit from someone and she
fits into that, shes not short either shes
22 inches
other then that id say diapers, wipes,
blankets (lots of em, i find blankets are
easier when she spits up, they are always
there on her ayway and are bigger so they
can be used longer), but cream (just in
case), petroleum jelly even if its a girl
(when they get sick its best to take a
rectal temp, i know its gross but its the
most accurate), onsies, a couple sute
outfits, carseat (obviously), a few
breastpads (wheather you reastfeed or not
your milk will come in), stock up on
really absorbant maxi pads, a few
washclothes and towels, a couple sheets
for whatever baby is sleeping in, 2 4 oz
bottles and 2 8 oz bottles if
breastfeeding or 5 or each if bottle
feeding (my suggestion)
these are optional but i love them,
handprint/footprint kit and baby book and
lots of photo albums...make great memories
for later
also i suggest a notebook to log things in
(if baby gets sick or acts unusual its
best to write down the things he/she is
doing (diapers, pukes, crying, sleeping,
feedings, etc) to discuss with your doc so
you have it all right there and dont have
to try to remember times and stuff
oh its also nice to have bath stuff (body
wash etc) and lavender bath stuff saves my
life, its so calming and it smells
wondrful (great for colicy babies, ive
taken care of 2 and i beleive my daughter
is getting a bit of colic its a life saver
beleive me lol)

The best item that I used with my first
was cloth diapers. They were mainly used
for burping and spit up. They are also
very inexpensive.
I loved the newborn and 0 - 3 month button
up shirts. Their heads are just so wobbly
at the beginning that putting overshirts
on them can get a little nerve wracking.
Definitely maxi pads and breastpads.
I got the disposal lanisol (sp?) pads.
I can't really give you any numbers,
sorry! I know I used a lot of the above!!
The other posters gave great numbers!! I
would stick with that!!

I have 3 packs of newborn diapers...I
think its time I start getting bigger
sizes no?...I dont imagine they will be in
the newborn ones for all that long...????
Thanks for all your suggestions, I have
written them all down.
What about a breastpump...is it a must. I
will be breasfeeding and wont be returning
to work for about a year or so...is it
needed....???

3 packs of newborns should be good, unless
the baby turns out primee she/he will be
able to fit into 1s even if they are a
little big from birth so theres really no
use in getting too many newborns, unless
you want plenty for the next kid lol
a breastpump isnt an absolute must, some
people cant even use them (me being one of
them) it just doesnt get enough...i would
suggest getting a low cost one just to see
if it will work for you if you want one,
if you are on wic they may give you one,
and some hospitals even give you one, so
id ask around first befor eyou go spend
your money on something you can get free
pumps are useful if you want to have the
dad help feed or if you want to go out for
the day/night or if you want to drink or
something

Lol. Great thread, apart from I read it
thinking "Oh noo" lol. I have loads of
clothes, she's my first, I know they grow
quick but my friends have bought me loads
of stuff. For your first baby I don't
think it's a bad idea to buy lots of
clothes, like I have 6 white terry towling
(onesies/baby-gro's/bodysuits not sure
what people call them in different places)
and they're just for her to sleep in, 6
white vests, this set from next that has 3
vests and 3 baby-gro's, in neutral for
when she's first born. Umm, and loads of
outfits, like 6 pairs of trousers, 6 tops,
cardigans that my nan knitted and one i
bought. And a few neutral things from
before I knew she was a girl. Socks,
shoes, and most of it is in Newborn, First
size, Upto 1 month and upto 3 months and
0-3. I live in the north of England, she's
be born in Autumn and it gets soo cold up
here, especially for a newborn so yea, I
wasn't afraid of buying too much. I still
need a coat for her, mittons, hats, and
her coming home outfit lol. Yea i like
shopping for my girly.
Edited to add: ONCE I sort out a way of
putting pics on my computer I owe you all
belly pics, and I'll show you what I've
bought for her.

You just need:
two (6) packs of onesies - they will grow
out of them fast, so don't buy many
clothes because it's a waste of money.
Diapers - only buy two packs because
he/she will grow out of them fast too. The
newborn diapers have more in each
package.
Get sleeper 3 nightgowns (for boys too).
Easier to change them what there is an
open bottom.
You don't need burp clothes, just use a
towel
4 baby bottles, whether you are
breastfeeding or not. I used Avent.
2 crib sheets - no fancy bumpers or
blankets - these can kill your baby, so
just dont bother. but do get a mobile for
the crib, it helps.
get two good blankets to hold the baby in
while you're feeding.
get two soft towels for bathing
be sure to get infant socks - not baby
socks. put a pair on the baby's hands so
they can't scratch their face.
and I think that's pretty much it. We
ended up with so many presents - so many
clothes and toys. and the clothes were
useless in a week. So watch the clothing
budget, you don't need so many things.
Share clothes with your friends, recycle.
It saves a lot of time and money
