Do you have to get a pelvic examination to
get a prescription for birth control from
your doctor?

Many ob-gyns will give girls the pill
without a pelvic exam since many girls go
on the pill to regulate their period.
Other hormonal forms of birth control
usually require a pelvic exam since all
girls have to get one when they become
sexually active. If your doctor asks if
you want one, I highly recommend it. Not
too many people enjoy having one done, but
being ready for sex means being ready to
take care of yourself, and that includes
uncomfortable doctor visits!

It depends on where you live.
In New York State, you cannot get
horomonal birth control without a
pap-smear if:
You are over the age of 18.
Or
You are sexually active.
If you are under 18 or have not had sex
yet, then you can get birth control
without a pap smear.

Yay for New York state! I like that they
won't give birth control without a pap
first. Some people hate it, but I always
say, if someone's ready for sex, they
should be ready to go to the doctor and be
safe and responsible about it!

As far as I know most everywhere requires
a full exam including pap, etc.

Yep, same thing in Ontario. They will
only give you a prescription for 1 year's
supply of birth control after you have had
a full exam and pap - so they make sure
you're getting it annually.
Also, anytime you start or change birth
control (first time or new brand or new
type) the doctor will only give you a
3-month prescription so that you have to
come back for a follow-up appointment
after 2 1/2 months to see how you're
doing, talk about any side-effects you're
having, discuss, etc. before getting a
prescription for the remaining 9 months.
