Just Curious About What the Doctor Means .
Posted: 06-18-07 20:42pm

I went to the doctors Friday and he said that I am 1cm and a half dilated and that he can feel the babies head. I am just wondering what he means by he can feel the babies head. Does he mean that I am full effaced or what? Please dont be rude I am just wanting to understand somethings.

That probably means that the baby is at zero station. Try to relax because you are more than likely going into labor soon. The head is right where it needs to be and the pressure may cause your water to break or for you to go into labor.

Thanks for the advice. This is my second child but this pregnancy has came with complications. People are right when they say each pregnancy is different. I went into pre-term labor at 33 weeks and spent the weekend in the hospital. But I feel that this baby is atleast 6 or 7 lbs already. The doctor has never said anything about the baby being small. Sorry for babbling on it's just I dont really have many friends to talk to.

at 33 weeks its more a concern of the lungs being mature but if the doctor did think it was a concern there is medication he could put you on to speed up the process of maturing your baby's lungs..
dont feel weird asking any question! trust me we all ask some strange ones a time or two around here.. welcome to the forum and let us know how it goes.

When I went into pre-term labor at 33 weeks, they did give me the corticosteriod shots to mature the babies lungs. So if I had her now she would most likely be alright? The doctor also put me on procardia but he never said when to stop taking it.

I am just curious but how far along are you? If you are past 36 weeks you should be okay.

I am 35 weeks and 3 days pregnant. But ya know when I went into pre-term labor even then the doctor has never said anything about he was worried the baby would be to small. I wonder if he thinks the baby is an ok size. I stopped taking the procardia because I feel that I dont need it and my body is telling me that I am gonna have this baby real soon. I just hope it is not on June 28th because that is my daughters birthday. She is gonna be 2 yrs old.

I am not sure what procardia is but if your doctor put you on it you probably need to stay on it until he says to go off.

Don't be in such a rush to have your baby. Your body is designed to keep it in there for 9 and a half months for a reason. The lungs are not completely developed until you are 36 weeks along and sometimes even then the baby can end up with breathing problems. The further you go towards your due date the better.

first off, do not stop taking anything you were prescibed without talking to your doctor first

1 cm means that your cervix is open i cemtimeter, it needs to be 10 before the baby comes, it can stay at 1 or 2 for a month maybe longer

if he/she feels the head that just means baby is head down and engaged, my doc could feel my daughts head when she was +3 position, so you never know

i dont mean for this to sound rude but none of that means you are going into labor anytime soon, many subsquent pregnancies the mum starts to dialate sooner

the 1cm could also mean her cervix is shortened cuz she added after that that the dr said shewas half dilated wich not sure what that means maybe a fingertip dilated but her cervix has shortened quite a bit usually ur cervix is 4cm long and shortens closer to labor wich is prob how the dr can feel the babys head already.

I totally agree with this. Just because he can feel the head, doens't mean it's right there about to come out.

zero station is the station at which the head is visible with a slight push.
