Pregnancy Myths Posted By Someone Else Posted: 06-19-07 16:25pm
Ok so someone posted the following and it
is loaded with misinformation:
*sperm can live for upto 5 days inside the
female body. - It can live up 7 days
ladies. The male sperm die in the first
two days, and the female sperm can live up
to 7 days in the fallopian tubes as they
await the egg.
*an egg is viable for upto 36 hours after
ovulation - Unfortunately, this is false
too. An egg lives 12 to 24 hours at most.
You only have a 20-25% chance of
conception per cycle, but none on
annovulatory cycles when your body doesn't
release an egg.
*ovulation typically occurs 14 days before
not after your period (regardless of cycle
length). - No. Stress, poor diet,
over-exercise, and other factors can alter
your cycle and alter ovulation or
eliminate it for months. Women generally
ovulate between 11-14 days before their
next period, and there are ways of knowing
when you ovulate such as kits. BBT will
only show you if you have already
ovulated.
*it is rare for the luteal (post
ovulation) phase to change, a longer cycle
usually means you ovulate later. - Look
above.
*it is impossible to know exactly when you
ovulate, without being a dedicated long
term charter. Therefore it is impossible
to say exactly when you are fertile. -
Charting is fine if you want to know if
you are ovulating (so that the doctor can
determine if you have a fertilty issue),
but it is not a good indicator of upcoming
ovulation.
*pregnancy is a risk you take any time you
have sex (even on b/c because that is
only, at best, 98-99% effective). - Saying
this shows how women don't always ovulate
14 days before. Thanks.
*day one of the cycle is the first day of
bleeding. - Day one is bleeding, yes.
Don't count the spotting days as the
initial day.
*therefore your window of highest
fertility is from 5 days prior to
ovulation until 2 days after. - 5 days
prior yes, two days after is too late.
How would I know this? I worked in a
fertility office and had a web site for 7
years where doctors were invited to
discuss fertility. Sorry if this post
seemed rude, I just want women to have a
clearer view of their bodies.
