the Pill + Condoms = Wasted Pleasure Or Efficient? Posted: 06-21-07 14:13pm
My girlfriend and I have been having sex
regularly for a while now. She is on the
pill (Lo-Ovral), but I have still used
condoms as kind of a safeguard against the
pill failing. She is religious in taking
her pill (same time every day) and has
been on it for years. Both she and I are
eager to lose the condoms, but I still
would like to know how much protection I'm
losing by doing so. My guess would be not
very much... constant taking of the pill
appears to be pretty good protection, even
if I ejaculate inside her. I'm just
thinking that the added protection I'm
getting from the condoms (if any) is worth
the pleasure I hear I'm losing, haha. Any
thoughts or experiences with this sort of
thing?

If she takes the pill every day and at the
same time every day, it is about 99%
effective. So it is not 100% effective,
but it is close enough that many couples
use the pill alone. If you are nervous
about losing that little bit of extra
protection, you could ditch the condoms in
favor of a spermicide.

She's allergic, so that isn't really an
option. When people say 99% effective,
that means that 1 in 100 women will become
pregnant within a year of using the pill
alone?

yes, that's what 99% effective means.
I'd say yes, lose the condoms

Yup, pretty much. Actually, according to
this site http://www.plan
nedparenthood.org/birth-control-pregnancy/
birth-control/effectiveness.htm., it
is .3 women out of 100 (so 3 out of 1000)
become pregnant in the first year with
perfect use (taking every pill, every day,
same time), and 8 out of 100 become
pregnant in one year with typical use
(forgetting a pill every once in a while,
taking a pill late, etc.). So if she is
taking it like she should, she's very well
protected.

Beautiful! Thanks all! It may take a
deep breath and a shade of courage (you're
taught from the time you start sex ed that
condoms are a MUST), but I think losing
the condoms is the way to go.
Thanks again for the advice!

Condoms are not as effective as birth
control pills (other forms of
contraception may be as high as %99.8 but
things still happen. I assume that condoms
may help but statistically speaking lets
say the pill she is taking is 99% and
condoms are about 85%, after calculating
the odds that just brings you up by about
.5% if that. So better safe than sorry. I
have been on bc for a long time allowing
my bf to go inside and have not become
pregnant. Good luck!

I was say to lose the condom as well. If
she is on the pill and follows the regimen
religuously then I think the statistics
are in your favour. Besides, I know from
experience that doing it 'bareback' is
better that having the guy put an cover
over his erection. I also like the feeling
when the guy cums inside me and I feel it
spurting up inside my vagina.
