Autoimmune Response to Vasectomy Trigger Ms? Posted: 03-03-04 09:58am
I had a vasectomy about 1.5 years ago, and
am starting to have problems that I
believe are an either direct or indirect
result of the vasectomy. I am
experiencing erectile dysfunction,
increased palipitations related to my
mitral valve prolapse, dizzyness/hazyness,
fatigue, stuttering, forgetfulness, having
trouble processing what I see, and random
itching. I first though that it may a low
testosterone level, until I found this
article by an md:
"autoimmune diseases? Possibly, with
genetic predisposition. For a very few
number of men, vasectomy has been known to
lead to serious and chronic conditions.
There is an extremely small incidence of
autoimmune diseases like multiple
sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis
following vasectomy."
my mother has ms. Now I am thinking that
perhaps what I am experiencing is an
autoimmune response, and I am very afraid
that it will trigger ms. I am 99% sure I
will reverse the vasectomy asap.
Am I thinking clearly?

There is no way of telling if your
vasectomy triggered the symnptoms, or if
it was a coincidence. The fact that there
is ms in your family is more significant
-- and obviously your mother didn't have a
vsec to trigger hers! My father had ms,
and I have now started to show some
symptoms, age 40, although it is not a
clear dx. The doctors were asking me if
i'd had any flu or anything like that in
recent months, so I guess there is a
feeling that any sort of pressure on the
immune system can trigger it. But it
seems very unlikely that having the vsec
reversed will do any good, if it was
surgery then going through it again could
make it worse, no?

It has been a while, but I have since been
able to find the reason for my problems.
Now it may be true that these problems
would have been hidden forever if I never
got a vasectomy , but with some really
frank soul-searching, I did have some of
these problems before my vasectomy.
My problems were being caused by two
things:
severe sleep apnea: after being tested, I
was told that I stopped breathing 170+
times that night (5 hours sleep). Before,
I would never wake up with erection, but
now when I wear my mask, I wake up with an
erection 100%.
Severe allergy to dust mites: it just so
happened that I moved into my current home
which has wall-to-wall carpeting just
before getting my vasectomy. Well, I have
not before lived in a home with carpeting,
and after getting two sinus infections
just a few months apart, my doctor
suggested that I might have allergies. He
gave me a sample of allegra, and, I kid
you not – it may have well have been a
sample of viagra. The change was that
immediate and that apparent. That
prompted me to go to an allergist, and he
discovered that I have about as severe an
allergy as he has ever seen to dust mite
poop.
These days, I have no problems in the
bedroom (except for two little children
that won't stay out of our bed!). Like I
said before, these problems may have been
brought to the surface by my vasectomy,
but they had to have been there before in
some amount. I have to say that I now
think that have the vasectomy has made no
difference in me physically, and now that
I know what my problems actually were,
mentally and emotionally as well.
